Java Web Services Tools
by Madan Revoor (http://www.madanrevoor.com/)
Section: Editorials
Sat, Feb 24th 2007 00:00
Web Service tools in Java are into their third generation now. Web
services were introduced with the hype of a loosely coupled technology for
inter-connecting disparate endpoint systems. But they are, in fact,
suffering from their tight coupling based on the WSDL data specifications
and data types. Most of the current tools offer quick solutions to expose
existing code as web services, but none offer a simple, yet intuitive and
full-featured client.

Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Hardware
About: amforth is a distribution of Forth running on the AVR ATmega
microcontroller. Once put into flash, it needs only a serial connection to
the host computer. New words are compiled directly into flash, thus
extending the dictionary immediately. It is ans94 Forth oriented with some
minor exclusions and a few words from the extension word sets. It is
written in assembly language and Forth itself. The main development uses
ATmega8 and ATmega32 controllers; other ATmega controllers should work
with small adjustments.
Changes: This release corrects many errors and makes a few steps forward
to dpans94 compliance. Some words have been moved from the core system to
source modules.

Information Management :: Records Management
About: Animal Shelter Manager is a complete computer solution for animal
sanctuaries, rescue shelters, and veterinary surgery clinics. It features
complete animal and owner management, document generation, flexible
reporting, charts, Internet Web site publishing, and more.
Changes: Currency formatting for the locale was fixed. The custom report
editor works for all database platforms. The lock menu option works
correctly again. The DOA/PTS Flags on In/Out report were fixed. The diet
icon bug was fixed. The icons were renamed in line with the actual image
sizes and formats. The asm.bat file was re-enabled for 98/ME machines that
cannot work with the new bootloader. Image scaling now always retains
aspect ratio. A Linux AMD64 build was added. The deb package now includes
window manager menu items for Ubuntu/Debian. The "getdbfsfile" command was
added to allow retrieving of any file from the DBFS.

Office/Business
Office/Business :: CRM
Office/Business :: Scheduling
About: Auto Project Planner automatically calculates a proper project plan
based on your effort estimations and the due dates you have in mind. A list
of tasks and a list of employees can be defined. Tasks can be assigned to
one or more employees. It is also possible to define a maximum percentage
value an employee can/should work on a task. Public holidays, leaves,
weekly working hours, and more parameters can be specified and are
considered in the calculation. According to this input, the software
computes time plans by minimizing the MSE (mean squared error) between
expected and computed end dates.
Changes: This version allows exporting of Project Plan Charts to HTML.
Additionally, a first real version of the homepage is available.

[007] - C Minimal Perfect Hashing Library 0.6
by Davi de Castro Reis (http://freshmeat.net/users/davi/)
Sat, Feb 24th 2007 05:32
About: C Minimal Perfect Hashing Library is a portable LGPL library to
create and to work with minimal perfect hashing functions. The library
encapsulates the newest and more efficient algorithms available in the
literature in an easy-to-use, production-quality, fast API. The library is
designed to work with big entries that cannot fit in the main memory. It
has been used successfully for constructing minimal perfect hashing
functions for sets with billions of keys.
Changes: This release adds an implementation of a classical minimal
perfect hash algorithm called fch. This is used as a basis for a new
algorithm that can create minimal perfect hashes for billions of keys with
less than four bits per key, and is ready to use. Suggestions and bugfixes
from users have been incorporated.

Software Development :: Build Tools
Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)
About: Cobras is a programming environment for Qt, and is written in Qt
itself. It has an integrated debugger (as a front-end for GDB), and is
very functional and helpful. It is fast and easy to use. It consists of
one binary file (plus an icon for the desktop). It does not create its own
files when working with a project, but uses only the original '.pro' file.
Changes: Now during debugging time, it is possible to see the contents of
strings (QString and std::string). New tool dialogs for debugging were
implemented, which display assembler code and memory contents. There are
some new corrections and many optimizations.

[012] - fastutil 5.0.7
by Sebastiano Vigna (http://freshmeat.net/users/vigna/)
Sat, Feb 24th 2007 14:25
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: fastutil extends the Java Collections Framework by providing
type-specific maps, sets, lists, and queues for Java with a small memory
footprint and fast access and insertion; it also includes a fast I/O API
for binary and text files. The classes implement their standard
counterpart interfaces (e.g., Map for maps) and can be plugged into
existing code. Besides the usual features, fastutil provides
reference-based containers (which do not use equals() to compare objects)
and linked structures. Most iterators provided by fastutil classes are
bidirectional, or even implement the standard list iterator interface.
Changes: A better algorithm is used for queue fronts. A brand new
collection of array-based sets and maps were added for quick access to
very small collections.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Video
About: Floola is an application to efficiently manage your iPod or your
Motorola mobile phone (any model that supports iTunes) under Linux, Mac OS
X, and Windows. Video and music files can be easily added and removed.
Playlists can be managed with simple drag-and-drop. Lyrics and artwork are
supported. Tracks can be submitted to last.fm. Podcasting is supported as
well.
Changes: A podcast download button bug was fixed. A keynotfound error with
smart playlists in some rare occasions was fixed. Some MP3 files could
freeze the application in extremely rare situations. An issue with big
ArtworkDBs was fixed. The genre wasn't included when adding songs. The
artwork core is much faster. Some Italian terms should have been removed
from the Menus on Mac. When a pls was deleted, the entire list of
playlists disappeared. This has been fixed. An absolute path issue when
importing generic playlists was fixed. Brazilian and Catalan translations
were added.

[016] - Gujin 1.9
by Etienne (http://freshmeat.net/users/etiennelorrain/)
Sat, Feb 24th 2007 12:45
System :: Boot :: Init
About: Gujin is a PC boot loader which can analyze your filesystems. It
finds the Linux kernel images available, as well as other bootable
partitions (for *BSD, MS-DOS, Windows, etc.), and displays a graphical
menu for selecting which system to boot. Because it understands the
structure of Linux kernel images, Gujin does not need LILO and can even
load ELF kernels. There is no need to execute anything after making a new
kernel: just copy the kernel image file into the "/boot" directory. Gujin
is written almost entirely in C with GCC, and it fully executes in real
mode to be as compatible as possible.
Changes: A problem with detecting E820 memory in some configurations was
fixed. A pre-compiled lotiny.exe was added in standard.tar.gz to simplify
debugging. Control-Break is treated to force failure to load the kernel
and return to the menu. IDE HPA size and failure to read IDE configuration
are displayed in the initial screen.

Sat, Feb 24th 2007 12:18
Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
About: LambdaRogue is a rogue-like role playing game set in the future of
a somehow "parallel world" to our own. People had to go underground to
survive a war between human society and the once peaceful Drakh'Nar,
another species on the planet. People founded the NeoTerr nation and tried
to build up a prosperous civilization. This worked, until suddenly strange
creatures came down the Great River Styx. The river has now become a
source of fear and terror. The player has to follow the river through
NeoTerr and discover the reason. The atmosphere is rather strange,
influcenced by phantasy and cyberpunk.
Changes: The game has totally changed since beta 2 and (the unreleased)

[026] - Linux Bluetooth Remote Control 0.3
by Matthias Bläsing (http://freshmeat.net/users/matthiasblaesing/)
Sat, Feb 24th 2007 11:11
About: Linux Bluetooth Remote Control (LBRC) is a remote control program
that allows a Linux computer to be controlled by a J2ME device via
Bluetooth. It is divided into a server part that runs on the computer and
reacts to input events and a client part that runs on the J2ME device. The
J2ME client sends the device's keycodes, which are translated to
keystrokes, mouse movements, mouse clicks, or other input events on the
controlled computer.
Changes: The core Bluetooth receiving part was remodeled to use
asynchronous I/O to make forking unnecessary. A mappings file for Sony
Ericsson K610i was added. Infrastructure was added to BTServer.py and

Sat, Feb 24th 2007 12:24
Communications :: Chat
Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: MOHA Chat is a chat solution which comes with a intuitive Web
client and can run on most shared hosts. MOHA Chat consumes fewer
resources on the server side and is fast on the client side. It uses AJAX
to retrieve the chat messages and user status. The client polls the server
at regular intervals. It currently supports only one-to-one chatting with
the Web client. The Web client encrypts messages using a key unique to the
client when sending a message to the server and vice versa.
Changes: The HTTP_Request PEAR package is used instead of CURL for the
plug-in PHP proxy. A problem with MOHA database configuration was fixed.
Uploaded files can now be downloaded correctly.

[032] - Mother ORM 0.4.8
by efphe (http://freshmeat.net/users/efphe/)
Sat, Feb 24th 2007 12:26
Database
About: Mother is a Python module that hides SQL syntax and gives you a set
of intelligent classes and methods that can self-adapt and understand
various situations. It could be considered as an Object Relational Mapper
with strong introspection. In fact, configuration files, tables, fields,
and keys declarations are not needed. It works with PostgreSQL and its
introspective nature is based on PostgreSQL meta queries.
Changes: This version has two goals: solving some bugs introduced with the
0.4.7 and releasing the new submodule plugins. The first official plugin is
released: MotherCaster. This plugin controls field types and required
fields, and is able to do autocasting and to drop automatically invalid
fields. The plugin is very useful when Mother is used in combination with
Web forms.

the outside world at all times, and ensures that exactly one machine
within the cluster is listening on each virtual IP address that Wackamole
manages. If it discovers that particular machines within the cluster are

the virtual IP addresses the down machines were managing. At no time
will more than one connected machine be responsible for any virtual IP.

by Sam Hocevar (http://freshmeat.net/users/sammy/)
Sat, Feb 24th 2007 12:02
Security
Software Development :: Quality Assurance
Software Development :: Testing
About: zzuf is a transparent application input fuzzer. Its purpose is to
find bugs in applications by corrupting their user-contributed data, which
frequently comes from untrusted sources on the Internet. It works by
intercepting file and network operations and changing random bits in the
program's input. zzuf's behavior is deterministic, making it easier to
reproduce bugs.
Changes: This release fixes a few 64-bit issues. Memory limits now work on
OpenBSD and long options work on systems that do not have getopt_long().
The mmap() reimplementation is now less intrusive and does not modify the
heap address space.
