[001] - Absolute OS 11.0.92
  by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
  Thu, Mar 29th 2007 12:13

About: Absolute is a lightweight Slackware Linux derivative distribution
that uses an Icewm, ROX-Filer window/file manager combination. It comes
with Firefox, The GIMP, MPlayer, K3B, kTorrent, Gaim, Frostwire, Gftp,
StarDict, Skype, and many other titles all set up and ready to run.
Several utilities are included to ease configuration and management. It is
compatible with all Slackware 11 packages and can be installed just like a
Slackware disk, except that you cannot choose which packages to install or
remove, as it just installs everything.

Changes: Icewm has been recompiled for proper features and memory usage.
This keeps Absolute (with just Firefox) memory usage under 32 MB. This is
the final release in the 11.0.x series. 11.1 will be based on what will be
Slackware 11.1 with the 2.6 kernel.

Office/Business
Office/Business :: CRM
Office/Business :: Scheduling

About: Auto Project Planner automatically calculates a proper project plan
based on your effort estimations and the due dates you have in mind. A list
of tasks and a list of employees can be defined. Tasks can be assigned to
one or more employees. It is also possible to define a maximum percentage
value an employee can/should work on a task. Public holidays, leaves,
weekly working hours, and more parameters can be specified and are
considered in the calculation. According to this input, the software
computes time plans by minimizing the MSE (mean squared error) between
expected and computed end dates.

Changes: All remaining known bugs and stability issues have been fixed.
The GUI, the example projects, and the documentation has been reworked.

  by viric (http://freshmeat.net/users/viric/)
  Thu, Mar 29th 2007 08:50

Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Software Development :: Bug Tracking

About: bug is a simple tracking system for console users. It only depends
on common Unix commands. Its database format is a text file containing
simple tabbed columns which can be even hand-edited. It uses $EDITOR for
submitting or editing the issues and for changing states or priorities. It
relies on four fixed fields: ID, Priority, State, and Subject. There is
also a fifth free-text field for any other information you may want to
store about the issue. There is no database locking or notifications, so
it's mostly for tracking the user's own issues.

Changes: All bashisms have been changed so that the program works with
POSIX sh.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
Software Development :: Object Brokering

About: EJOE is a lightweight Java client/server component built to send
and receive objects through pluggable (de)serialization mechanisms. It
offers a high-performance, simple, and clean object request broker
(whereby ORB is meant in its natural manner and not in its relation with
CORBA), with server and client components for your client/server
applications. It's a highly scalable implementation of the common
request-process-response pattern based on Java NIO. It does support
optional remote class loading to avoid redundant classpath entries, but
doesn't require stubs and/or proxy objects.

Changes: Some minor bugs and the broken gzip compression were fixed. New
adapters for XMLBeans and JSON Tools were added. This release contains a
factory for dynamic proxy classes and a caching mechanism for native
ByteBuffer objects.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: MIDI

About: GENPO (GENeral Purpose Organ) is a program which replicates the
essential features of any pipe, theatre, or reed organ. It reads a
description of an organ (a .org XML file) and presents a suitable user
interface for operating that organ. There are a number of high quality
organ "SoundFonts" freely available and the .org file maps the stop sounds
to organ manuals and stops. Other facilities such and couplers and presets
are available. You may connect one or more MIDI keyboards to GENPO to
provide the organ manuals, and you can even assign one to be the
'pedalboard' if so desired.

Changes: This release is aimed at improving usability a little, and one
requested feature has been added. The main changes are the addition of
--singlestop mode, and an --outport= option that directs output to a
specified ALSA device. There are also minor performance and build
improvements.

[011] - GNU Virtual Private Ethernet 2.01
  by Marc A. Lehmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/pcg1/)
  Thu, Mar 29th 2007 12:18

Communications
Internet
System

About: GNU VPE creates a virtual ethernet by creating host-to-host tunnels
between multiple endpoints. Unlike other virtual private "network"
solutions which merely create a single tunnel, it creates a real network
with multiple endpoints. It is designed to be conceptually simple and
straightforward to setup (assuming prior IP routing knowledge) without
sacrificing flexibility. It is designed to sit on the gateway machines of
company branches to connect them, but it can also be used to tunnel into a
VPN with a variety of protocols (RAW IP, ICMP, UDP, TCP, HTTPS-Proxy, DNS).

Changes: The I/O multiplexer was updated to fix some long-standing bugs
surfacing on some architectures. The DNS tunneling protocol has been
stabilised, and experimental support for SHA256 and SHA512 has been added.

[016] - IzPack 3.10.1 (Stable)
  by Julien Ponge (http://freshmeat.net/users/JPz/)
  Thu, Mar 29th 2007 09:47

Software Development
System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Software Distribution

About: IzPack is a powerful Java installer builder. It is able to create
lightweight and modular installers. You have the choice of the installer
panels you want to use (some can do the same job, so that you can select
the one you prefer), and you even have the choice of the kind of installer
that you want to use. IzPack doesn't use any portion of native code, it is
designed to be fully independent from the operating system that runs it.
It is very easy for the end user with a properly installed JVM to use an
installer made with IzPack, since a single "java -jar installer.jar" will
launch it.

Changes: This maintenance release brings many fixes and translation
updates. Users are strongly encouraged to migrate installers to this
release.

[018] - Linux LiveCD Router 2.0.23 (VoIP Router)
  by jaimeghirelli (http://freshmeat.net/users/jaimeghirelli/)
  Thu, Mar 29th 2007 23:53

About: Linux LiveCD Router allows you to share and firewall your broadband
connection and use WiFi. It works with DSL, cable modem, T1, and dial-up
connections and supports inexpensive hardware such as USB and PCMCIA WiFi
and ethernet cards. It does not require a hard disk. It is ideal for high
speed (5 Mbps+) ADSL lines, since most WAN ports on integrated routers do
not support speeds higher than 5 Mbps.

Changes: Linux kernel 2.4.34.1 is now used. Minor changes were made for
saving configuration to hard disks and flash disks. Minor bugs were fixed.

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
System :: Logging

About: Logback is intended as a successor to the popular log4j project,
and was designed by log4j's founder, Ceki Gulcu. The basic architecture is
sufficiently generic so as to apply under different circumstances. It is
divided into three modules. The Core module lays the groundwork for the
other two modules, whereas the Classic module can be assimilated to an
improved version of log4j. It natively implements the SLF4J API so that
you can readily switch back and forth between logback and other logging
systems, such as log4j or JDK14 Logging. The Access module integrates with
Servlet containers to provide HTTP access log functionality. You can easily
build your own modules on top of the Core module.

Changes: Significant bugfixes have been made to c.q.l.access.TeeFilter.
Images and other binary files are now intercepted and replayed correctly.
As for "x-www-form-urlencoded" post requests, their input buffer is left
untouched. The first version of a plugin for Eclipse that allows
developers to see the logs generated by a running application has been
released.

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries

About: The OpenDBX library provides a unified and consistent API for
software developers to different database management systems. The function
library is written in the C programming language and aims at implementing
access to the native database interfaces efficiently via a thin
abstraction layer. It consists of a basic set of functions that are part
of all vendor database libraries and can be extended by additional
function blocks. Currently, Firebird/Interbase, MS SQL Server, MySQL,
Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQLite 2 and 3, and Sybase ASE are supported.

Changes: This version enhances the library with a read-only large object
interface, which enables access to blob and clob data stored within a
database. The Firebird backend is the first one that implements this
interface and is now able to fetch data objects up to several GB in size
is smaller chunks. Along with the new interface, the code for the backends
was split into several files, so it is more clearly arranged when
extensions like the large object part will be added. Also, replacing
stdint.h by the inttypes.h include removes an undesired dependency on
automake from the header file.

  Thu, Mar 29th 2007 05:40

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: OpenVZ is a modified Linux kernel with additional support for
OpenVZ Virtual Environments (VE, also known as VPS). VEs are isolated,
secure environments on a single physical server, enabling better server
utilization and ensuring that applications do not conflict. Each VE
performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server; VEs can be
rebooted independently and have root access, users, IP addresses, memory,
processes, files, applications, system libraries, and configuration files.
Due to a single kernel model, OpenVZ has native performance and very high
density. It is the core of Virtuozzo.

Changes: This release is an initial port to the 2.6.20 kernel.

[038] - The Life of a Geek 2.0stable (Stable)
  by danq (http://freshmeat.net/users/core_dump_0/)
  Thu, Mar 29th 2007 05:00

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: The Life of a Geek is very silly console game in which you (a geek)
must keep a computer running until you graduate college. Surf around on the
Internet, battling hackers to gain money and better security for your box.
Drink lots of caffeine to keep yourself awake, since if you go to sleep,
you risk an attack on your computer. Save up money to take a month-long
college course and improve your education, but remember that paying
attention to schoolwork also leaves your computer open to attack. Find a
quick job for a month at places like fast-food restaurants and grocery
stores, but remember again that time away from your computer leaves it
open to attack. Viruses may also appear on your computer, weakening your
computer's health points regularly until cleaned.

Changes: Improved randomness, a fix for a bug where more energy drinks
could be bought than the available money allowed, and support for
compiling using Visual C++.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries

About: Tntnet is a Web application server for generating Web applications
in C++. HTML pages with some additional tags for inclusion of C++ code are
compiled into shared libraries and served from tntnet. It resembles PHP,
JSP, or Mason, but the programming language used is C++, and the pages are
compiled into native code before serving. Tntnet is fully multithreaded and
supports HTTP keep-alive for best performance. Its dynamic pages are faster
than static pages with other Web servers, while creating Web applications
is simple.

Changes: The license was changed from GPL to LGPL, which allows creation
of closed source Web applications. Poll has been replaced with epoll on
platforms where it is available, which improves performance significantly
on boxes with high load. URLs are now decoded. Listener-threads are
removed, which removes a context-switch when new connections arrive. A
race-condition was fixed, which caused tntnet to segfault on MP-boxes
under high load.
