Software Development :: Object Brokering :: CORBA
About: autotools-idl is a patch for automake and some autoconf scripts
that adds support for IDL and C++ ORBs. It tries to provide full support
for compiling IDL files to C++ stubs and skeletons. The autoconf scripts
provide unified detection of different C++ ORBs.
Changes: This is the first non-beta release. Support for TAO 1.6 has been
added. Some rules about compatibility between versions have been
established.

[002] - bashcritic 0.2.0
by Matteo Corti (http://freshmeat.net/users/corti/)
Thu, Oct 18th 2007 08:23
Software Development :: Quality Assurance
About: bashcritic is a tool to check bash scripts for common pitfalls.
Changes: The field shells is now an array reference. A given rule is
checked only for a set of shells. 80 columns seems to be what is usually
recommended (Sun and Linux kernel). The FUNCTION description has been
reworded. Command substitution of the form "$(COMMAND)" is not accepted
when --bourne is specified. The ">&" type of redirection is in the POSIX
standard and is now accepted. The advice about arithmetic compounds has
been removed. This release will warn about here string for every shell.
EXPORT_ASSIGN has been reformatted, which is only relevant for Bourne.
There is a new rule about export and variable quoting.

Multimedia :: Graphics
About: Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) is a free, public-domain collection of
about 60 UNIX tools that allow users to manipulate (x,y) and (x,y,z) data
sets (including filtering, trend fitting, gridding, projecting, etc.) and
produce Encapsulated PostScript File (EPS) illustrations ranging from
simple x-y plots through contour maps to artificially illuminated surfaces
and 3-D perspective views in black and white, gray tone, hachure patterns,
and 24-bit color. GMT supports 25 common map projections plus linear, log,
and power scaling, and comes with support data such as coastlines, rivers,
and political boundaries.
Changes: The build system has been replaced. There is also an improvement
to how the BCR 2-D interpolations for images and grids are done by adding
B-spline and nearest neighbor as optional interpolants, an introduction of
a new PostScript Level 2 pattern machinery in pslib.c, an updated GSHHS
coastline version (which also includes Australia internal state
boundaries, fixes to the Yemeni and Lebanese borders, and more river
lines), and general improvements and corrections to the documentation.

[013] - GNU MP3 Daemon 3.0 (Stable)
by Steve Kemp (http://freshmeat.net/users/skx/)
Thu, Oct 18th 2007 13:57
Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: GNUMP3d is a small, portable, and robust server for streaming MP3s,
OGGs, and other audio files. It presents a simple and attractive interface
to Web browsers, which allows you to navigate through your music
collection. Individual files may be streamed, as can whole directory
trees. Other features include the ability to see your most popular tracks,
and to search your collection for songs.
Changes: This release features the removal of the weak password protection
system that was previously present. The protection was so weak and
misguided that removal is a better thing for users than attempting to make
it work. Additionally, several small bugs were fixed.

[016] - HapCluster++ 2.1.6
by Thomas Mailund (http://freshmeat.net/users/mailund_birc/)
Thu, Oct 18th 2007 14:00
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.
About: HapCluster++ is a software package for linkage disequilibrium
mapping using coalescent theory. It is based on a Bayesian Markov-chain
Monte Carlo (MCMC) method for fine-scale linkage-disequilibrium gene
mapping using high-density marker maps. HapCluster++ is a C++
implementation of the method described in the paper "Fine Mapping of
Disease Genes via Haplotype Clustering" by E.R.B. Waldron, J.C. Whitaker,
and D.J. Balding. Genetic Epidemiology. 30: 170179. (2006).
Changes: This version adds an option for restricting the MCMC search to a
sub-interval of the full data. This is especially useful for SNPFile data,
where the regions can be very wide, but where convergence and mixing can be
very poor.

[017] - Internet DJ Console 0.7.1
by Stephen Fairchild (http://freshmeat.net/users/psoriasis/)
Thu, Oct 18th 2007 09:38
About: Internet DJ console is a graphical shoutcast/icecast client that
runs under GTK+ and the JACK audio connection kit. In short, it's an
Internet radio app for making a live radio show or podcast. Features
include two main media players with a crossfader, a jingle player,
microphone signal processing (compressor and noise gate), IRC track
announcements with X-Chat, an automatic stream shut-off timer, MP3 or Ogg
streaming and recording at various bit rates, aux input for connecting
external JACK aware applications, and audio level meters.
Changes: Shoutcast servers now receive the bitrate, number of channels,
and sample rate information. The update button triggers server
reconnection when using shoutcast. Handling of corrupt m4a files has been
added so that the application does not crash. ffmpeg support has been
added for decoding m4a files for those with faad2 version 2.5 and over.
Better exception handling has been added to the vu_update function to
allow cleaner exiting. The program idjcctrl now has connect and disconnect
commands for making and breaking server connections.

Utilities
About: Logger is a log queueing and optimization utility. It can handle
logs larger than 2GB and perform automatic nightly log rotation without
affecting services. Any application that writes a log can be maintained be
Logger, including syslogd. It is light, small, and fast, emphasizes
security, and reduces drive usage through memory queueing.
Changes: This release adds a switch to the COMPILE script to force Logger
to write a log file out when a memory queue has been inactive for one
hour. This addresses an issue with bursty logs like xferlog (FTP) where
activity may not be constant.

[020] - madwifi 0.9.3.3
by madwifi_org (http://freshmeat.net/users/madwifi_org/)
Thu, Oct 18th 2007 08:31
About: Madwifi provides a Linux kernel device driver for Atheros-based
Wireless LAN devices. The driver presents the WLAN card as a normal
network interface. It includes support for Virtual APs, which makes it
possible to configure a single radio as several APs, and support for
multiple modes such as a station, ad-hoc, or monitor. The driver is
compatible with the Wireless Extensions API, which allows a Madwifi device
to be configured with common wireless tools (ifconfig, iwconfig, and
friends). Madwifi is released under a dual BSD/GPL v2 license, except for
the binary-only HAL.
Changes: This release fixes a security issue (CVE-2007-5448) where remote
attackers could cause a denial of service (panic) via a beacon frame with
a large length value in the extended supported rates element. Also,
compilation against kernel 2.6.23 was fixed.

[022] - Miredo 1.1.3 (Unstable)
by Rémi Denis-Courmont (http://freshmeat.net/users/rdenisc/)
Thu, Oct 18th 2007 09:42
Internet
System :: Networking
About: Miredo is an implementation of the "Teredo: Tunneling IPv6 over UDP
through NATs" proposed Internet standard (RFC 4380). It can serve either as
a Teredo client, a stand-alone Teredo relay, or a Teredo server. It is
meant to provide IPv6 connectivity to hosts behind NAT devices, most of
which do not support IPv6, and not even IPv6-over-IPv4 (including 6to4).
Changes: Brittle NAT type determination was removed; this release somewhat
runs behind symmetric NATs. Teredo addresses are randomized as a network
scan mitigation. Network configuration can be customized using a hook
shell script. Many debug messages were added. The clock subsystem was
rewritten to be battery friendly. ARM architecture support was fixed.

[046] - wingS 3.1
by Holger Engels (http://freshmeat.net/users/hengels/)
Thu, Oct 18th 2007 08:28
Software Development
About: wingS is a servlet development framework for Web applications. It
features Swing-like components and utilizes Swing models, Swing events,
and a very similar API. A special LayoutManager allows you to place
components using designer provided HTML templates. The HTML code
generation of the components themself supports PLAF (Pluggable Look and
Feel), so it is possible to create a different output, like plain HTML,
HTML+CSS, and WML.
Changes: This is a maintenance release with noticeable performance
improvements, official WebKit support (Safari), and lots of other valuable
enhancements. The JavaScript libraries have been consolidated towards YUI,
thus the initial load time has been reduced to a minimum. Dialogs, the
auto completion component, and the calendar especially benefit from the
smartness of YUI. There is now a plugin mechanism, which makes the
integration of custom or third party components as simple as can get. Just
drop in a jar and start using it.
