Education
Games/Entertainment :: Simulation
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
About: Biogenesis simulates in a visual fashion the processes involved in
the evolution of unicellular organisms in nature. It tries to be a
didactic approximation to the ideas of mutation or evolution, and can be
enjoyed also as an entertainment. It's intended to serve as a support to
show students some basic biological facts. The idea of Biogenesis is taken
from Primordial Life, but it's an independent project.
Changes: This release increases performance by using OpenGL where
available, has new network capabilities, and includes new toolbars to
access most used commands easily.

About: Bugzero is a Web-based bug tracking, defect tracking, issue
tracking, and change management system used in a distributed team
environment to track software bugs, hardware defects, test cases, or any
other issues. It can also be used equally well as a helpdesk customer
support, trouble ticketing, or email management system to collect and
manage customer feedbacks, incidents, requests, and issues. It is easy to
use, but still flexible and adaptive, and can be configured to fit to your
organization's unique business process and workflow.

[004] - CacheGuard OS 5.2.2b
by Afshin Tajvidi (http://freshmeat.net/users/tajflow/)
Sun, Oct 21st 2007 08:27
Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Security
About: CacheGuard is a Linux-based operating system dedicated to Web
traffic control and optimization. It transforms an x86-based machine into
a powerful, Web gateway appliance. It allows you to secure Web traffic for
Web surfers and Web servers by acting as a forwarding and reverse HTTP /
HTTPS proxy. It supports HTTP transparent implementation, HTTP
compression, Web caching, URL black- and whitelist guarding, and Web
server load balancing. It features a stateful firewall with NAT and PAT,
and a content filtering module blocking malicious HTTP requests like XSS,
SQL and Command Injection. It integrates a caching DNS, a DHCP server, a
bandwidth shaper to manage the QoS, a load sharing system, and an HA (high
availability) mode with VRRP and link bonding.
Changes: The administration audit module is activated even if the "filter"
and "rweb" modes are not activated. In the command "rweb", when adding a
reversed Web site name, a mandatory IP address must be given for a HTTP
Web site as well as for an HTTPS Web site. The QoS policy for a reversed
Web site has been changed to be based on its public IP address. Some minor
bugs have been fixed in the QoS module.

Artistic Software
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Raster-Based
About: Evolvotron is an interactive "generative art" application to evolve
images/textures/patterns through an iterative process of random mutation
and user-selection driven evolution. If you like lava lamps, and never got
tired of the Mandelbrot set, this could be the software for you. It's
implemented using Qt, and is multithreaded.
Changes: Mainly a development release focusing on memory management (now
makes extensive use of Boost smart pointers), cleaning up threading code,
using precompiled headers, and replacing the messy static-initialized
function meta-information with something less troublesome. There are
several minor end-user visible improvements. For example, the default
number of compute threads is now set to the number of processors found,
colours tend to stay in a sensible range instead of saturating, the
application icon is derived from the last spawned image, and there are a
few new functions.

by Kumosan (http://freshmeat.net/users/kumosan/)
Sun, Oct 21st 2007 08:08
Communications :: File Sharing
About: GSTorrent is a Bittorrent client/server system. A daemon program
handles all the file transfers as a Bittorrent client. The GSTorrent
daemon also acts as a server for an external GUI client. The objective is
to have a relatively small Bittorrent client, which runs on a small
computer without a graphical interface and to control this server from a
different machine. An example of this type of architecture is the mldonkey
client/server system for the edonkey protocol.
Changes: Stopped/restarted or paused/resumed downloads very often remained
in the 'connecting' state indefinitely. When this happened, it was
necessary to delete all the previously downloaded data. This show-stopper
has been fixed.

[032] - NRL NORM 1.4b1
by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Sun, Oct 21st 2007 08:11
System :: Networking
About: NRL NORM is an implementation of NACK-Oriented Reliable Multicast.
The NORM protocol is designed to provide end-to-end reliable transport of
bulk data objects or streams over generic IP multicast routing and
forwarding services. NORM uses a selective, negative acknowledgement
(NACK) mechanism for transport reliability and offers additional protocol
mechanisms to conduct reliable multicast sessions with limited "a priori"
coordination among senders and receivers. The protocol offers a number of
features to allow different types of applications or possibly other higher
level transport protocols to utilize its service in different ways. The
protocol leverages the use of FEC-based repair and other IETF reliable
multicast transport (RMT) building blocks in its design.
Changes: This release fixes a condition where receivers kept state for
remote senders "stuck" with CC feedback. It fixes a bug that turned the
default TTL value into TOS under certain conditions. NormFile read/write
is more persistent. A bug has been fixed that incorrectly reported no
repair needed when in fact the last segment was missing. A bug that
interfered with proper sender stream advancement under severe conditions
has been fixed. FEC codecs have been updated to current versions. The
"lowDelay" option has been modified for silent receiver use to allow
control of FEC block delay. A "Norm Pre-Coder" (NPC) utility has been
added.

[048] - SymPy 0.5.5
by Ondrej Certik (http://freshmeat.net/users/ocertik/)
Sun, Oct 21st 2007 02:56
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries
About: SymPy is a symbolic manipulation package, written in pure Python.
Its aim is to become a full featured CAS in Python, while keeping the code
as simple as possible in order to be comprehensible and easily extensible.
Currently, Sympy has only around 1600 lines of code (including comments),
and its capabilities include basic arithmetics, basic simplification,
series expansion, functions (exp, ln, sin, cos, tan, etc.),
differentiation, integration (currently it can do only very simple
integrals), basic substitution, arbitrary precision integers and
rationals, standard (Python) floats, basic complex numbers, and symbolic
limits.
Changes: The sympy.abc module was added for quickly importing predefined
symbols. Nice pretty printing is done when a Unicode-capable terminal is
available. "isympy -c python" now also supports true division. The
documentation was improved. pyglet was patched to conform to Debian
policy. A lot of problems with series expansion were fixed. However, the
series expansion fails for some more complex expressions. (This problem
has been present since SymPy 0.5.0.)
