[006] - Cacti 0.8.7a (Development)
by Ian Berry (http://freshmeat.net/users/raxnet/)
Sun, Nov 18th 2007 00:56
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: Cacti is a complete frontend to RRDTool. It stores all of the
necessary information to create graphs and populate them with data in a
MySQL database. The frontend is completely PHP driven. Along with being
able to maintain graphs, data sources, and round robin archives in a
database, Cacti also handles the data gathering. There is SNMP support for
those used to creating traffic graphs with MRTG.
Changes: Several bugs that were found since the release of 0.8.7 have been
fixed. Two new RRDtool 1.2x specific enhancements have been added. Since
one of the bugs fixed deals with security, it is recommended that all
users upgrade or grab the patch on the Cacti website.

[011] - deco archive file extractor 0.5.4
by P. Hartlich (http://freshmeat.net/users/phartlich/)
Sun, Nov 18th 2007 00:24
System :: Archiving
About: deco is a generic archive file extractor that has a consistent
command line interface ("deco 1.tar.bz2 2.zip 3.flac 4.rar 5.deb" will
just work) and consistent behavior (it never deletes archives after
extraction, extracts relative to the current working directory, and
extracts just verbosely enough, all unless explicitly requested
otherwise). It provides automatic handling of extractor gotchas by
creating an extraction directory if there is more than one file or
directory at the archive top level and by being able to fix strange
permissions. Dozens of archive file extensions are supported out of the
box, and adding support for others requires very little work.
Changes: A significant typographical error was corrected in the flac
extractor. A more consistent usage note was written. Minor code cleanups
were made.

[012] - DreamChess 0.2.0
by Walter van Niftrik (http://freshmeat.net/users/waltervn/)
Sun, Nov 18th 2007 17:01
Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy
About: DreamChess is an open source chess game. Our primary target
platforms are Linux, Windows, Dreamcast and BeOS. DreamChess features 3D
OpenGL graphics and provides various chess board sets, ranging from
classic wooden to flat figurines. A moderately strong chess engine is
included: Dreamer. However, should this engine be too weak for you, then
you can use any other XBoard-compatible chess engine, including the
popular Crafty and GNU Chess. Other features include on-screen move lists
using SAN notation, undo functionality, and savegames in PGN format. In
future releases we plan to add support for time controls, audio, network
play, more visual effects such as reflections and shadows, and 3D animated
pieces.
Changes: The main new feature is sound support. Some songs are available
for download in a musick pack. Graphically, the game has been improved
significantly. This was made possible by the decision to drop the
Dreamcast port. The old 3D models have been replaced by new models with a
lot more detail. Other improvements include reflections, hardware
lighting, new textures, and a new sketch theme.

Sun, Nov 18th 2007 06:08
System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: The sysstat package contains the sar, sadf, iostat, mpstat, and
pidstat commands for Linux. The sar command collects and reports system
activity information. The statistics reported by sar concern I/O transfer
rates, paging activity, process-related activites, interrupts, network
activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU utilization, kernel
activities, and TTY statistics, among others. The sadf command may be used
to display data collected by sar in various formats. The iostat command
reports CPU statistics and I/O statistics for tty devices and disks. The
pidstat command reports statistics for Linux processes. The mpstat command
reports global and per-processor statistics.
Changes: mpstat and sar didn't parse /proc/interrupts correctly when some
CPUs had been disabled. This is now fixed. This release also fixes a bug
in pidstat which caused confusion between PID and TID, resulting in
erroneous statistics values being displayed. The iconfig script has been
updated: Help for the --enable-compress-manpg parameter is now available,
help for the --enable-install-cron parameter has been updated, and the
parameter cron_interval has been added.

[051] - The Castle 0.8.0
by Michalis Kamburelis (http://freshmeat.net/users/kambi/)
Sun, Nov 18th 2007 06:35
Games/Entertainment :: First Person Shooters
About: The Castle is a first-person shooter game in a dark fantasy
setting. Your main weapon is a sword, so the fight is mostly short-range.
Three main levels are included, packed with creatures, items, and sounds.
A couple of bonus levels are also available, like the classic DOOM E1M1
level reimplemented in VRML. The game engine is based on VRML, OpenGL,
OpenAL, and all shadows are done by the shadow volumes approach.
Changes: A new demo level was added: the fountain, done in pure VRML 2.0
format (no more VRML 1.0). Major shadow improvements were made: z-fail was
implemented and proper detection when z-fail is needed is done, so faster
z-pass is used when possible. Shadow volumes silhouette optimization was
improved: now models don't have to be perfect 2-manifolds to use this.
Frustum culling for shadows was much improved. Arrows are affected by
gravity. An underwater "sick" projection effect was added. Numerous memory
and speed optimizations were made. A new "Conserve memory" feature fixes
all issues on older Radeon graphic cards.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers
About: view3dscene is a viewer for VRML 1.0, VRML 2.0 (aka VRML 97), 3DS,
and MD3 files. It supports viewing the scene in the "Examine" mode and
walking in the virtual world with features such as collision detection and
gravity. Rendering is done using OpenGL. A built-in ray-tracer allows the
generation of images with more effects (like shadows and mirrors) and
conforming precisely to the VRML 97 lighting specification. The program
can also convert files from 3DS and MD3 formats to VRML 1.0 and
pretty-print VRML files.
Changes: VRML 2.0 prototypes (both PROTO and EXTERNPROTO) are fully
implemented now. VRML 2.0 light scope is correctly handled. ROUTE
constructs are parsed. Default blending dest factor for view3dscene is
GL_ONE_MINUS_SRC_ALPHA, since this is expected by most VRML authors. VRML
files compressed by gzip are handled properly even if they have the normal
wrl extension. The --write-to-vrml option fixed. Handling of colors
(color, colorPerVertex, colorIndex) for IndexedFaceSet and IndexedLineSet
is done. NavigationInfo.speed is now handled correctly (it sets speed per
second). Text3D extension was added.

[066] - Zero Install Injector 0.31
by Thomas Leonard (http://freshmeat.net/users/tal197/)

Internet
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Software Distribution
About: The Zero Install Injector makes it possible for users to install
software easily and without the need for root privileges. It takes the URL
of a program's interface description and chooses suitable versions of the
program and all of its dependencies (also identified by URLs) according to
the user's policy settings (eg. "stable", "testing", "minimal network use",
etc). The chosen versions are downloaded and cached and the program is run,
using environment variables to let it find the components.
Changes: Integration with RPM is now supported, in addition to dpkg. This
allows a native RPM to fulfil a dependency from a Zero Install package.
Bindings can now be given for implementations, not just for dependencies,
making some programs easier to package. Some minor bugs were fixed.
