[003] - Apache SQL analyser 0.5
by Steve Kemp (http://freshmeat.net/users/skx/)
Wed, Nov 28th 2007 15:18
Internet :: Log Analysis
About: asql allows you to run SQL queries against log files formatted in
the Apache common log file format. You may load multiple log files into a
session, then run queries using a full SQL implementation, to find things
such as the most common referers to your site, the greediest downloaders,
and much more. Internally, each log file is parsed and imported into a
temporary SQLite database, so performance is very good.

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering
About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: The speed and functionality of the graphical user interface has
been greatly improved, with a zoom feature and full transparency support
under MS Windows. The intersections routine was fixed. The 2D and 3D graph
routines were improved. Degenerate 3D reference vectors are now handled. A
marker dot routine was added. A history(int n=1) function can be used to
return the interactive history. Locale bugs were fixed. A string[] split
function was added. Installation, uninstallation, and diagnostics under MS
Windows were improved. The output(s,update=true) function was fixed.

[008] - Bitgate Server Software Environment 0.6.1
by Ken Hollis (http://freshmeat.net/users/Tsuichi1/)
Wed, Nov 28th 2007 22:49
Internet
About: Bitgate Server Software Environment aims to build a multi-protocol
application environment in which server protocol handlers can be
eventually loaded and unloaded on the fly using a center console or
controller Web page. It aims to have 99.9% uptime, and have
high-availability compliance. It is written in Java 6, and relies
completely on Java's I/O functionality to provide non-blocking support for
both SSL and non-SSL sockets (without having to know how to use SSLEngine).
All configuration is done via XML files, as this is easier to maintain. It
includes a minimal demonstration HTTP server.
Changes: Many changes were made to help with stability. SSL now works well
again. WriteFuture objects were added, like that of MINA. HTTP Keep-Alive
functionality was added. A cache was added to HTTP requests via a
FileCache mechanism. Shutdown hook code was added. Some synchronization
issues were fixed along with SSL over NIO and failing POST tests with
Freemarker.

About: cgmail (check Gmail) is an email checker and notifier applet for
the GNOME desktop. It will periodically check your Gmail account and will
notify you of new incoming messages. It will use GNOME Keyring to store
your credentials for security enhancements instead of storing it in plain
text files. It uses a fresh DBUS notification to tell you that a new
message is into your Gmail inbox.
Changes: This release fixes a sound bug: Disabled gnome play engine in
lib/utils.py. Now the autostart option in the config dialog should always
work. A POP 3 bug has been fixed. Now all email messages should be always

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Cibyl is a programming environment that allows compiled C/C++
programs to execute on J2ME-capable phones. Cibyl uses GCC to compile
programs to MIPS binaries, and these are then translated into Java
bytecode. The use of binary translation and the simplicity of translating
MIPS instructions means that Cibyl programs can be quite well-performing.
With Cibyl, programs written in C/C++ can be ported to J2ME without
switching languages.
Changes: Constant propagation for MIPS register values has been
implemented, the peephole optimizer and GDB support have improved, and
callback handling has been generalized.

Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: class.upload.php manages file uploads for you. It manages the
uploaded file and allows you to do whatever you want with the file as many
times as you want. If the file is an image, you can convert and resize it,
rotate it, and crop it in many ways. You can also add borders, frames,
bevels, add of text labels and watermarks, or apply various graphical
effect filters. Security features and file management functions are
provided. The class can also work on local files, which is useful for
batch processing images online, and can circumvent open_basedir
restrictions.
Changes: This is a major rewrite of the graphic capabilities of the class.
Transparency and true color are fully supported, for PNG, JPEG, GIF, and
BMP pictures. More settings are available, such as MIME type enhanced
checking, sizes and dimensions checks, background color, default color for
non-transparent formats, etc., and the class provides more information on
uploaded files. The class can directly output files to the browser. Error
messages are now internationalized, and translations provided. The class
is compatible with PHP 4 and 5.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Raster-Based
About: Evolvotron is an interactive "generative art" application to evolve
images/textures/patterns through an iterative process of random mutation
and user-selection driven evolution. If you like lava lamps, and never got
tired of the Mandelbrot set, this could be the software for you. It's
implemented using Qt, and is multithreaded.
Changes: The little-used heat/cool/irradiate/shield buttons have been
replaced by an optional steady progressive "autocooling" mechanism.
Middle-mouse adjustments no longer flicker. Antialiased rendering is
supported by optional multisampling and sample jittering. Enlargement
images will now use multiple threads, and their command-line options
provide more control over threading. However, there are no new functions

II, but this can be customized; modpacks for near-100% compatibility with
Civ I and Civ II are included. Multiuser gameplay is real-time: in each
turn, all human players move concurrently. The game is designed to remain
fairly playable even on poor network connections. Freeciv can also be
played on standalone machines, and its AI players are a good challenge for
beginners. The source code comes with the server, two X clients, and non-X
clients for MS Windows and Amiga. Freeciv is released under the GNU
General Public License. It is maintained by an international team of
coders and enthusiasts, and is easily one of the most fun and addictive
network games out there.
Changes: Many bugs and minor issues were fixed; notably, some goto and
patrol bugs and crashes have been resolved. Bugs were also fixed in border
and vision behavior, in the city dialog, and in GGZ support code. The
Eiffel Tower wonder effect changed slightly. The SDL client has some

[029] - Gujin 2.3
by Etienne (http://freshmeat.net/users/etiennelorrain/)
Wed, Nov 28th 2007 03:42
System :: Boot :: Init
About: Gujin is a PC boot loader which can analyze your filesystems. It
finds the Linux kernel images available, as well as other bootable
partitions (for *BSD, MS-DOS, Windows, etc.), and displays a graphical
menu for selecting which system to boot. Because it understands the
structure of Linux kernel images, Gujin does not need LILO and can even
load ELF kernels. There is no need to execute anything after making a new
kernel: just copy the kernel image file into the "/boot" directory. Gujin
is written almost entirely in C with GCC, and it fully executes in real
mode to be as compatible as possible.
Changes: This version solves a problem with the VESA linear graphic menu
and Intel BIOS. Real disk BIOS number switching is done to boot Windows XP
with a USB thumb key. Problems of time-offset on the display were fixed.
The generic kernel parameter root=/dev/sd* (default) or root=/dev/hd* can
be used to specify the namespace to use for root autodetection. Two "tiny"
targets, named tinyusb.bin and tinycdrom.bin, were added to load a Linux
kernel (or a *.kgz file) from USB or CDROM without user intervention. A
check is done to see if the target device is mounted. More bugs were
fixed.

[030] - Hotwire 0.620
by Colin Walters (http://freshmeat.net/users/colinwalters/)
Wed, Nov 28th 2007 04:01
Software Development
About: Hotwire is a Python-based, object oriented, cross-platform command
execution shell. Hotwire is not a terminal emulator, nor is it something
you can set as your Unix "login shell". Instead, Hotwire unifies the
concepts of shell and terminal and can natively do about 80-90% of what
one would normally do in a terminal and shell; for the rest, Hotwire can
embed VTE. Hotwire's object-oriented nature is influenced by Windows
PowerShell. Hotwire provides a modern command interface for developers and
system administrators to interact with the computer.
Changes: Some system commands were changed to open in a new terminal
window which does not close when the command exits. Often you want to see
the final output of the command after it exits. Examples include "sudo"
and "su". Complete commands are only removed after they've been viewed.
Command output is significantly faster. UID/GID lookups are cached, which
speeds up file listings.

interface. It also adds the ability to simulate fluid dynamics (like
liquid and smoke) to the already existing rigid bodies, cloth, and wire
simulation. Houdini now integrates Python as a first-class scripting
language. Houdini's renderer, Mantra, now supports physically based
rendering (PBR) and fast volume rendering (for smoke, among other things).
Houdini's prices were also reduced for version 9, and its new
non-commercial $99 "Starving Artist Edition" was recently released. It's
also available as a totally free Apprentice edition.

[044] - NRL NORM 1.4b3
by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Wed, Nov 28th 2007 05:23
System :: Networking
About: NRL NORM is an implementation of NACK-Oriented Reliable Multicast.
The NORM protocol is designed to provide end-to-end reliable transport of
bulk data objects or streams over generic IP multicast routing and
forwarding services. NORM uses a selective, negative acknowledgement
(NACK) mechanism for transport reliability and offers additional protocol
mechanisms to conduct reliable multicast sessions with limited "a priori"
coordination among senders and receivers. The protocol offers a number of
features to allow different types of applications or possibly other higher
level transport protocols to utilize its service in different ways. The
protocol leverages the use of FEC-based repair and other IETF reliable
multicast transport (RMT) building blocks in its design.

[065] - Tokyo Cabinet 1.0.8
by Mikio Hirabayashi (http://freshmeat.net/users/mikio/)
Wed, Nov 28th 2007 07:14
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Tokyo Cabinet is a library of routines for managing a database. It
is the successor of QDBM. Tokyo Cabinet runs very fast. For example, the
time required to store 1 million records is 1.5 seconds for a hash
database and 2.2 seconds for a B+ tree database. Moreover, the database
size is very small. For example, the overhead for a record is 16 bytes for
a hash database, and 5 bytes for a B+ tree database. Furthermore, the
scalability of Tokyo Cabinet is great. The database size can be up to 8EB.
Changes: Concurrency of multi-thread access was improved. Some test cases
were added.

[066] - ucommon 1.0.0
by David Sugar (http://freshmeat.net/users/davidsugar/)
Wed, Nov 28th 2007 10:58
Software Development :: Libraries
About: UCommon is a lightweight C++ library to facilitate using C++ design
patterns even for very deeply embedded applications, such as for systems
using uClibc along with POSIX threading support. For this reason, UCommon
disables language features that consume memory or introduce runtime
overhead. UCommon introduces some design patterns from Objective-C, such
as reference counted objects, memory pools, and smart pointers. UCommon
introduces some new concepts for handling of thread locking and
synchronization.
Changes: Extensive work in documenting the behavior of the API and
providing complete doxygenized headers was performed. Significant
refactoring for both simplicity and consistency in the class framework was
also made. Finally, preparatory work to allow direct merging of the ucommon
and GNU Common C++ frameworks into a single framework was completed.

[067] - ufdbGuard 1.14
by UFDB support (http://freshmeat.net/users/ufdb/)
Wed, Nov 28th 2007 11:12
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: ufdbGuard is a URL filter. The URL filter blocks access to sets of
Web sites on the Internet and is designed to be used with the popular Web
proxy server, Squid. ufdbGuard also dynamically detects proxy tunnels and
blocks access. The multi-threaded daemon uses a fast algorithm that does
25,000 URL verifications per second on an Intel 2.8 GHz Xeon CPU. On a
Conroe Core 2 at 2.4 GHz, the speed is nearly doubled.
Changes: This release has 2 major fixes and 6 minor fixes. A performance
problem that was introduced in version 1.13 is also fixed. The software
suite has a new lightweight HTTP daemon to serve redirection messages.
There is a new program to analyse a Squid log file and report usage of URL
categories. Excite and dogpile.co.uk are added to the list of SafeSearch
search engines. The -U option is introduced to switch to another user ID
(this eliminates the use of "su"). All users are recommended to upgrade.

[069] - vlock 2.2-rc3 (Development)
by Frank Benkstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/toidinamai/)
Wed, Nov 28th 2007 07:16
Desktop Environment :: Tools
Security
Terminals
About: vlock is a program to lock one or more sessions on the Linux
console. This is especially useful for Linux machines which have multiple
users with access to the console. One user may lock his or her session(s)
while still allowing other users to use the system on other virtual
consoles. If desired, the entire console may be locked and virtual console
switching disabled.
Changes: A critical security problem (a local root exploit) was found and
corrected: previous versions of vlock (since 2.2 alpha1) contained a
serious flaw that allowed any user to execute arbitrary code as root. This
was possible because plugin names could contain "../", thus escaping the
pre-defined plugin directory. All users of vlock 2.2 development versions
are advised to update. Besides the security issue, script handling was
improved and two more example scripts were added.
