[001] - Absolute OS 12.1 beta2
by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
Fri, Feb 1st 2008 10:56
About: Absolute is a lightweight Slackware Linux derivative distribution
that uses an Icewm, ROX-Filer window/file manager combination. It comes
with Firefox, The GIMP, MPlayer, K3B, kTorrent, Gaim, Frostwire, Gftp,
StarDict, Skype, and many other titles all set up and ready to run.
Several utilities are included to ease configuration and management. It is
compatible with all Slackware 11 packages and can be installed just like a
Slackware disk, except that you cannot choose which packages to install or
remove, as it just installs everything.
Changes: A new kernel (tickless, low-latency desktop preemptive model,
Pentium Classic minimum CPU) wicd replaces wifi-radar (set the wicd daemon
to start when you install, or later in the root services menu; a tray icon
appears when using icewm). This is primarily a maintenance release,
updating packages to current. It includes gimp-2.4.3 with all the SCRIP-FU
updates from gimphelp.org.

[016] - delsafe 0.4.1
by psds (http://freshmeat.net/users/psdasilva/)
Fri, Feb 1st 2008 23:30
About: delsafe is a set of utilities to hopefully allow you to recover
recently deleted files. Basically, when you delete or in certain cases
overwrite a file the original file is moved into a trash can. It does this
by overriding the original unlink, rename, open, and fopen library calls
using the Linux LD_PRELOAD mechanism. Trash cans are placed on top of each
mount point and are accessible by each user directly or through links
placed in the user's home directory. This makes deletion very fast
because, in fact, it is only a renaming. To each filename in the trash can
is appended a time/version stamp.
Changes: A small bug that caused "undel foo" to recover "foo-*" files was
fixed.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3
About: DerMixD is an audio mixing and network-listening daemon that is
similar to mixplayd but quite different in its implementation. It supports
the playing of music files on a run-time configurable number of input
channels, mixing them together and producing output on a run-time
configurable number of output channels. It is controlled over a TCP socket
and supports scripting, gapless playing of tracks, including filtering of
null samples from padding, use of mpg123's equalizer, flexible
input/output connection, changing playback speed, and more.
Changes: This version is an enhancement for uninterrupted playback also
when there is a lot of background work going on. This includes work
scheduling enhancement for the mixer and the new preread command (to get
the files into the filesystem cache before playback).

About: Extrema, originally developed in the fields of nuclear and particle
physics, is a powerful visualization and data analysis tool that enables
researchers to quickly distill their large, complex data sets into
meaningful information. Its flexibility, sophistication, and power allow
you to easily develop your own commands and create highly customized

[022] - Free Conquest and Colonization of America 0.8.0
by Andre Wagner (http://freshmeat.net/users/andre_nho/)
Fri, Feb 1st 2008 17:15
Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy
About: Free Conquest and Colonization of America is a remake of a
fantastic old game from Microprose called Colonization. Those who have
played Civilization will find the game style very similar. In
Civilization, the game time goes from pre-history to the future, but in
Free Conquest and Colonization of America, all action happens during the
exploration age, from 1492 to 1800. The goal of the game is to build a
colony in America and make this colony grow big enough to be able to
achieve independence from the motherland. A player can choose among the
English, French, Dutch, and Spanish nations, each having its own qualities
and problems. During colonization, the player will face many challenges,
such as negotiating (and making war, if necessary) with other European
colonies and native tribes. Winning the hearts of the colonists (by making
they feel that the colony is their home) is the key to getting enough
support to fight for independence. Allowing religious freedom in your
colony will attract more colonists persecuted for their faith in Europe.
Changes: After a full rewrite (both of code and graphics), a completely
new version is released.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis
System :: Archiving :: Compression
System :: Filesystems
About: Freedup finds and eliminates duplicate files by linking them, and
thus reduces the amount of used disk space within one or more file
systems. By default, hardlinks are used on a single device, symbolic links
when the devices differ. A set of options allows you to modify the methods
of file comparison, the hash functions, the linking behavior, and the
reporting style. You may use batch or interactive mode. Freedup usually
only considers identical files, but when comparing audio or graphics
files, you may elect to ignore the tags.
Changes: This release no longer needs external commands to perform its
tasks. If no "find options" are passed using -o, the internal tree
scanning is used. It is supposed to run faster, but this could not be
proven. The only visible advantage is a progress indicator.

About: Javeau is a small tool meant to provide an easy way to create and
use encrypted directories, using strong cryptography and a simple
interface. It works under Java 6. Data stored in these folders are
encrypted and safe (using 256 bit encryption); they can be accessed only
by the user (by providing the password used to create the folder), and
their integrity is checked to prevent data tampering. The application
sports a convenient file-manager-like interface, is very fast and small,
and is completely cross-platform: you can access your encrypted storage
everywhere you can run a Java 6 VM.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: LimeSurvey (formerly PHPSurveyor) is a Web application that
interacts with MySQL or MSSQL to develop surveys, publish surveys, and
collect responses to surveys. Once a survey has been created, data can be
inserted into the survey either by a "pretty" public screen which presents
each question one at a time, or by a quick and nasty data entry screen. It
includes the capacity to generate individualized "tokens", so that
invitations can be issued to participants. It also has the capacity to set
conditions on whether questions will display (branching), numerous question
types, and a basic statistics function.
Changes: This release fixes numerous issues regarding superAdmin rights,
some display issues, and issues in statistics. It adds the Norwegian
Nynorsk language.

by Ghede (http://freshmeat.net/users/Ghede/)
Fri, Feb 1st 2008 10:31

System :: Filesystems
About: MinorFS combines a small set of cooperating userspace filesystems
for Linux that provide private storage to pseudo persistent processes.
This allows programs that are run by a user to keep some data safe from
all potential malware that runs with all this users' privileges. It
further implements simple password capabilities as a way to explicitly
share access with other processes or users.
Changes: This version adds the possibility of delegation. Each file or
directory now has an extended attribute that makes it possible for the
owner (that is, the pseudo-persistent process) to do basic delegation of
files and directories. Delegation makes use of a concept known as password
capabilities. Next to the functional improvements, this version comes with
an install script that should make installation less problematic.

[046] - Pantheios 1.0.1 beta 93
by Dr Proctor (http://freshmeat.net/users/DrProctor/)
Fri, Feb 1st 2008 16:54
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Logging
About: Pantheios is a C/C++ logging API library. It offers an optimal
combination of complete type-safety, very high efficiency, genericity, and
extensibility. It is simple to use and extend, highly portable (platform
and compiler independent), and it upholds the C tradition of only paying
for what you use. Pantheios supports logging of message statements of
arbitrary complexity, consisting of heterogenous types. Pantheios supports
filtering of log messages based on severity level.
Changes: This release incorporates enhancements to be.fprintf and

[047] - Paperkey 0.8
by David Shaw (http://freshmeat.net/users/davidshaw/)
Fri, Feb 1st 2008 10:23
Security :: Cryptography
About: A reasonable way to achieve a long term backup of OpenPGP (GnuPG,
PGP, etc) keys is to print them out on paper. Due to metadata and
redundancy, OpenPGP secret keys are significantly larger than just the
"secret bits". In fact, the secret key contains a complete copy of the
public key. Since the public key generally doesn't need to be backed up in
this way (most people have many copies of it on various keyservers, Web
pages, etc), only extracting the secret parts can be a real advantage.
Paperkey extracts just those secret bytes and prints them. To reconstruct,
you re-enter those bytes (whether by hand or via OCR), and paperkey can use
them to transform your existing public key into a secret key.
Changes: The file format is now included as part of the base16 output, as
there is no guarantee that this program will be on-hand when a
reconstruction is necessary. The format can also be displayed via the
--file-format command. Some bugfixes (actually to gnulib, but relevant
here as well) have been made to the SHA-1 code on platforms that require
aligned access. A new --comment option adds comments to the base16 output.

Fri, Feb 1st 2008 13:20
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering
Scientific/Engineering
About: VisIt is an interactive parallel visualization and graphical
analysis tool for viewing scientific data. Users can quickly generate
visualizations from their data, animate them through time, manipulate

rich set of visualization features so that you can view your data in a
variety of ways. It can be used to visualize scalar and vector fields
defined on two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) structured and
unstructured meshes. It was designed to interactively handle very large
data set sizes in the terascale range, and works well down to small data
sets in the kilobyte range.
Changes: This release includes a number of bugfixes and new features. It
supports setting the background for a visualization to a user-specified
image, which can be tiled flat or used as a spherical background that
moves with the camera. It has a new annotation that inserts extruded text
into a 3D visualization. The query infrastructure has been improved, and
new queries were added. The plot list now provides a context menu that
offers per-plot controls.

Fri, Feb 1st 2008 10:26
About: Wiak is a very efficient, special-purpose, usually non-interactive,
extremely lightweight IPC shell that is used for building client/server
"wiakapps". A variety of demonstration wiakapps are available as part of
the current WIAK suite. The name WIAK stands for the "WIAK Interface für
