[009] - Crossroads Load Balancer 2.00
by Karel Kubat (http://freshmeat.net/users/karelk/)
Fri, Aug 8th 2008 03:45
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Networking
About: Crossroads is a daemon running in user space, and features
extensive configurability, polling of back ends using wake up calls, status
reporting, many algorithms to select the 'right' back end for a request
(and user-defined algorithms for very special cases), and much more.
Crossroads is service-independent: it is usable for any TCP service, such
as HTTP(S), SSH, SMTP, and database connections. In the case of HTTP
balancing, Crossroads can provide session stickiness for back end processes
that need sessions, but aren't session-aware of other back ends. Crossroads
can be run as a stand-alone daemon or via inetd.
Changes: This version is a complete rewrite. It is now a multi-threaded
program (as opposed to a forking daemon), which greatly enhances
performance and decreases system load. The balancer is now configured via
the command line (as opposed to a configuration file). This version is beta
code until proven in the field. Historic stable 1.xx versions are still
available.

[012] - deco archive file extractor 1.5
by P. Hartlich (http://freshmeat.net/users/phartlich/)
Fri, Aug 8th 2008 13:14
System :: Archiving
About: deco is a universal archive file extractor that has a consistent
command line interface ("deco 1.tar.bz2 2.zip 3.flac 4.rar 5.deb") and
consistent behavior (never deleting archives after extraction and
extracting relative to the current working directory, just verbosely
enough, all unless explicitly requested otherwise). It creates an
extraction directory if there is more than one file or directory at the
archive top level, and it is able to fix strange permissions. Dozens of
archive formats are supported out of the box, and the modular design makes
adding support for others trivial.
Changes: Support for tar.7z/t7z archives has been added.

[019] - Google Gadgets for Linux 0.10.1
by suzhe (http://freshmeat.net/users/suzhe/)
Fri, Aug 8th 2008 09:58
Desktop Environment
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: User Interfaces
About: Google Gadgets for Linux provides a platform for running Google
Gadgets under Linux, catering to the unique needs of Linux users. It's
compatible with the gadgets written for Google Desktop for Windows as well
as the Universal Gadgets on iGoogle. There are two main components to the
application: one is a common gadget library responsible for running and
presenting a gadget, and the other is a host program that allows the user
to choose gadgets and run them on the desktop. Currently it has hosts
written for GTK+ and Qt, with the GTK+ host offering a sidebar similiar to
that of Google Desktop for Windows.
Changes: This is a major bugfix and feature enhancement version. A
prototype of the Gadget Designer gadget has been added. It's not only a
Gadget Designer, but also a demo to show the power of Google Desktop
Gadgets API, because it is itself a gadget. A new Photos gadget has been
added, which can display your favorite photos from the Web or a local
directory as a slideshow. Lots of bugs have been fixed, and some popular
gadgets can run without problem, such as facebook and Google Calendar
gadgets.

[020] - Hilbert II 0.03.11
by m31 (http://freshmeat.net/users/m31/)
Fri, Aug 8th 2008 21:45
Documentation
Education
Internet
About: The goal of Hilbert II, which is in the tradition of Hilbert's
program, is the creation of a system that enables a working mathematician
to put theorems and proofs (in the formal language of predicate calculus)
into it. These proofs are automatically verified by a proof checker.
Because this system is not centrally administered and enables references to
any location on the Internet, a world wide mathematical knowledge base
could be built. It also contains information in "common mathematical
language".
Changes: After a huge amount of refactoring, the application is
reorganized and the build process is new. Ant is still used, but Maven POMs
are also provided. The Eclipse project directories are also included in the
magnified src directory, as well as various reports. The Apache Commons
library is used (e.g. for thread safe date formatting). The reorganized
build process and new package subdivision have lead to a new project
structure.

About: Hocuspocus is a small and extensible Web server for controlling key
Linux applications running on a machine remotely via a Web server. This
means you can adjust things like system volume from any browser, including
a WiFi enabled PDA such as the iPhone. Multiple such machines can be
controlled via a single service manager, which acts as a proxy for the
individual Web servers.
Changes: This version adds a user controllable refresh mechanism for many

[022] - ImgBrowz0r 0.1.1
by FSX (http://freshmeat.net/users/FSX/)
Fri, Aug 8th 2008 09:55
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: ImgBrowz0r is a PHP class that can be used to display galleries of
images stored in server side files. It scans a given directory for images
with file name extensions of GIF, JPEG, and PNG image formats. The class
can generate thumbnail image files which are used to display the gallery
images in an HTML table. The thumbnails are presented as links to pages to
show the full size images.
Changes: gmdate() is used instead of date() in $this->format_time().
mkdir() now makes the thumbs folder with chmod 0777 instead of 0700 in
$this->make_thumb(). A sorting bug in $this->view_categories() was fixed.
This bug appeared when only one empty folder was in the gallery folder.
$this->g_category is now false instead of empty when $_GET['c'] is not set.
Calls to unset() right before the return from $this->view_categories() and
$this->view_images() were removed. self::safe_url(),
self::base64_url_encode(), self::base64_url_decode(), and self::get_ext()
were made static.

About: Instantbird is a multi-protocol instant messaging client. Using it,
you can connect to all your different IM accounts. It uses the Mozilla
rendering engine to display messages, and uses the Pidgin libpurple to
connect to the different networks.
Changes: This version is more a stability/bugfix release than a feature
release. It is based on libpurple 2.4.3 and Mozilla 1.9.0.1. It is more
stable (outstanding bugs resulting in crashes were fixed). Breakpad has
been turned on to get more data on crashes. The tooltips of the buddy list
now contain detailed information. Most of the time was spent on the build
system. Instantbird can now be built like any other Mozilla application.
For developers, it will now be easy to play with the code, and users may
notice that the downloads are smaller.

can be written in Java. LanguageTool should be used after the spelling of a
text has been corrected.
Changes: This release adds support for the new grammar checking API in
OpenOffice.org 3.0 beta: it now displays blue wavy lines for errors
automatically, and a context menu with suggestions. It also adds initial
support for Russian and improves rules for Dutch, English, Polish, Swedish,
and German. Note that this release only works with a recent beta of
OpenOffice.org 3.0.

[034] - Mausezahn 0.32
by wonko6x7 (http://freshmeat.net/users/wonko6x7/)
Fri, Aug 8th 2008 20:54
System :: Networking
About: Mausezahn is a fast traffic generator which allows you to send
nearly every possible and impossible packet. Mausezahn can be used, for
example, as a traffic generator to stress multicast networks, for
penetration testing of firewalls and IDS, for simulating DoS attacks on
networks, to find bugs in network software or appliances, for
reconnaissance attacks using ping sweeps and port scans, or to test network
behavior under strange circumstances. Mausezahn gives you full control over
the network interface card and allows you to send any byte stream you want
(even violating Ethernet rules).
Changes: Support for CDP, DNS, QinQ, MPLS, and RTP. It is possible to
create every possible Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) packet through
Mausezahn's TLV interface. Similarily, the DNS interface is very flexible
(it should be possible to try out Kaminsky's attacks). This release
supports listening mode for RTP, which allows precise measurements of
jitter (delay variations). Many bugs have been fixed.

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
About: microQuestMaker64 is a native Commodore 64 application that makes
it easy to design small text adventure games in the tradition of "Zork" or
the legendary "Cave" adventure. It will run in an emulator as well as on
native C64 hardware. At the moment, it supports up to 100 rooms and 30
objects within a single game. Although the program is still incomplete and
under development, you can already edit rooms, define objects, and test-run
your game. Game data is stored in the Commodore "REL" file format, allowing
random access of records.
Changes: A generic file I/O routine has been implemented instead of
datatype-dependent file I/O, saving 4 blocks or about 1K of program size.
Obsolete code lines and comments have been removed.

Fri, Aug 8th 2008 13:23
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
About: phpLogCon is a Web front-end for syslog and other network event
data. It provides easy browsing and some basic analysis. Data are taken
from databases or plain syslog text files, so phpLogCon does not require
changes to an existing logging infrastructure. Depending on the log data
present, it can process syslog messages, Windows event log entries, and
some more exotic things. Its troubleshooting support enables users to
quickly find solutions to problems seen in the log data.
Changes: This release fixes a bug in the parsing of RFC 3164 date and time
stamps which occurred from the 1st to the 9th of each month (during this
time, the date was not correctly parsed), enhances the detail popup window
(it performs much better now, is less annoying, and still can be turned off
very easily), and fixes an image alignment problem.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Interpreters
Text Processing :: Markup
About: RefleX is a Java tool that allows people that have no particular
knowledge of Java to write smart programs entirely in XML. The concepts of
native XML programming used in RefleX have been designed separately, so
that other implementations on other platforms/languages can be considered.
As the tags used are considered "active", the underlying concepts have been
named "Active Tags". Programming in XML allows developers to efficiently
produce batch scripts as well as Web applications. With Active Tags, you
can dramatically decrease the number of lines you have to code.
Changes: "Schema mashups" are now available: if you want to boost your XML
schema, you should experiment with the Active Schema Language for building
dynamic content models and designing semantic data types. RefleX is also a
general-purpose XML engine that allow to run XML scripts in batch or on the
Web. Several standard modules go along with Active Tags (I/O, System, Web,
etc.) and specific modules for designing XML-based test suites (XUnit) and
test suites for Web applications (WUnit).
