[004] - Big Medium 2.0.6 (Stable)
  by Josh Clark (http://freshmeat.net/users/joshclark/)
  Thu, Sep 4th 2008 13:17

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Big Medium is a content management system aimed squarely at Web
designers who want a CMS that enables extremely flexible designs but
remains easy to set up without programming skills. The software does not
impose cookie-cutter layouts: If you bring basic to intermediate HTML/CSS
know-how, Big Medium can manage just about any design you throw at it. Once
the designer configures the templates, he or she can hand the site over to
content editors; no technical know-how is required to add or edit pages.
Big Medium's friendly, humane interface is easy and non-threatening for CMS
newbies.

Changes: This version fixes a bug introduced in version 2.0.4 which could
prevent Big Medium from properly importing document files from Big Medium
v1 sites. This update is recommended if you plan to import sites from Big
Medium 1.x into your Big Medium 2 installation. The version also fixes a
bug that could cause a brief flicker on some sites and in some browsers
when a page is first loaded.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Ripping
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing
System :: Archiving

About: cdrtools (formerly cdrecord) creates home-burned CDs/DVDs with a
CDR/CDRW/DVD recorder. It works as a burn engine for several applications.
It supports CD/DVD recorders from many different vendors; all SCSI-3/mmc-
and ATAPI/mmc-compliant drives should also work. Supported features include
IDE/ATAPI, parallel port, and SCSI drives, audio CDs, data CDs, and mixed
CDs, full multi-session support, CDRWs (rewritable), DVD-R/-RW, DVD+R/+RW,
TAO, DAO, RAW, and human-readable error messages. cdrtools includes remote
SCSI support and can access local or remote CD/DVD writers.

Changes: A new attempt was made to work around the autoconf unfriendliness
with GNU libiconv. Cdrecord now correctly writes DVD+R/DL media with all
drives.

[012] - Dapper Dataflow Engine 0.93
  by Roy Liu (http://freshmeat.net/users/royliu/)
  Thu, Sep 4th 2008 06:42

Information Management :: Workflow Frameworks
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: Dapper, or "Distributed and Parallel Program Execution Runtime", is
a tool for taming the complexities of developing for large-scale cloud and
grid computing, enabling the user to create distributed computations from
the essentials: the code that will execute, along with a dataflow graph
description. It supports rich execution semantics, carefree deployment, a
robust control protocol, modification of the dataflow graph at runtime, and
an intuitive user interface.

Changes: File-based edges have been removed in favor of those that convey
user-interpreted, abstract data handles; the result is a much simpler API.
Updates and additions were made to the pedagogical examples. The manual has
been improved with more appropriate figures and was updated to reflect
extensive API changes. Convenience methods for resource manipulation were
added.

[013] - deco file extraction framework 1.5.5
  by P. Hartlich (http://freshmeat.net/users/phartlich/)
  Thu, Sep 4th 2008 13:39

System :: Archiving

About: deco is a command-line program that, together with the deco-archive
package, allows you to extract dozens of popular archive file formats. It
has a consistent interface ("deco 1.tar.bz2 2.rar 3.zip 4.flac 5.deb") and
consistent behavior (never deleting archives after extraction and
extracting relative to the current working directory, just verbosely
enough, all unless explicitly requested otherwise). It creates an
extraction directory if there is more than one file or directory at the
archive top level, and it is able to fix strange permissions.

Changes: This release avoids relying on theoretically undefined behavior
with regards to pointers. The system's stat() function is called less
often, which reduces overhead on some platforms. deco's source code has
become more readable.

  by Azzam ALNIJRES, Kaesar ALNIJRES (http://freshmeat.net/users/kadrf/)
  Thu, Sep 4th 2008 17:10

About: Directory Recursive Files is a Java library that finds all files in
a root directory and all its sub-folders. It is very easy to use from other
Java projects or programs. There is a little tutorial online about using
DRF in Eclipse.

Changes: TFindAllFilesRecursive has a new constructor to find files with
extensions, a string in the name of files, tokens in files, and to limit
recursive research if needed.

[015] - Ecere SDK 0.43 (Stable)
  by Jerome St-Louis (http://freshmeat.net/users/jerstlouis/)
  Thu, Sep 4th 2008 06:38

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering
Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: The Ecere SDK is a cross-platform toolkit for building software
applications. It currently runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X (through
X11). With the Ecere SDK, you can develop applications once and deploy them
on all supported platforms alongside a lightweight runtime environment. It
introduces eC, an object oriented language derived from and fully
compatible with C, compromising neither runtime performance nor ease of
use. A built-in 3D engine supporting both Direct3D and OpenGL is fully
integrated.

Changes: Dynamic class templates for meta (generic) programming were
introduced in the eC language. Proper syntax highlighting was implemented
in the IDE. The debugger integration under Linux was significantly
improved. Many bugs and other issues were resolved. Packages for
Debian/Ubuntu and GoboLinux are now provided.

[019] - Galapix 0.0.2
  by Ingo Ruhnke (http://freshmeat.net/users/grumbel/)
  Thu, Sep 4th 2008 14:18

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: Galapix is an image viewer that allows you to directly zoom into
large collections of tens of thousand of images from tiny thumbnails down
to the images' original size fluently with short load times and no loss of
interactivity. It accomplishes this by keeping a tile cache which stores
not only thumbnails for one size, but thumbnails of many different sizes.

Changes: This initial release contains support for JPEG files and allows
you to smoothly zoom into a collection of those files. Up 50,000 files at
once should work fine. Support for other file formats is missing and the
background loading shows some visible artifacts.

Software Development :: Libraries

About: GLib is a library containing many useful C routines for things such
as trees, hashes, and lists. GLib was previously distributed with the GTK
toolkit, but has been split off as of the developers' version 1.1.0.

Changes: Updates were made to Unicode 5.1, to libcharset from libiconv
0.12, and to PCRE to 7.7. Support was implemented for the latest version of
the shared-mime specification, including icons for MIME types and content
types for volumes. FEN was introduced for file monitoring in GIO on
Solaris. New APIs were added for GIO, GObject, and GMarkup. A new callbacks
support function and several further new functions were added.
Internationalization support was improved with g_dgettext(), g_dngettext(),

Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: JavaPlot is a library that can be used as a way to create gnuplot
plots on the fly through pure Java commands. In contrast with other common
gnuplot Java libraries, it uses Java structures to store the various plot
parameters, including datasets. Moreover, it is flexible enough to give
special parameters to gnuplot, even if the library does not yet support it.
It uses Java's Exceptions to inform the user if something went wrong.

Changes: Basic support for Graph3D (splot) was added. An implementation of
user-defined terminals was created.

About: open-vcdiff contains an encoder and decoder for the format
described in RFC 3284: "The VCDIFF Generic Differencing and Compression

[049] - rsyslog 3.21.4 (Development)
  by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
  Thu, Sep 4th 2008 13:14

System :: Logging

About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among others, it
offers support for on-demand disk buffering, reliable syslog over TCP, SSL,
TLS, and RELP, writing to databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and many
more), email alerting, fully configurable output formats (including
high-precision timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of the syslog
message, on-the-wire message compression, and the ability to convert text
files to syslog. It is a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and able to
work with the same configuration file syntax.

Changes: The most important new feature is the ability to dynamically
configure the maximum length of a syslog message. Previously, this was only
possible via a recompile and can now be done via the new $MaxMessageSize
configuration directive. There are also a number of bugfixes in this
release. It is a recommended update for all development branch users.

Information Management :: Records Management

About: Data profiling is the process of examining the data available in
existing data sources (e.g. databases, applications, files, etc.) and
collecting statistics and information about this data. Data profiling
enables the assessment of the quality level of the data contained in the
information system, according to a defined set of metrics and goals. Talend
Open Profiler allows business users or data management staff to define a
set of indicators for each data element that needs to be analyzed or
monitored. It produces sophisticated reports and graphs that let users
gauge at a glance the level of quality of the data and the status of the
indicators that were defined.

Changes: Wizards for indicators options have been enhanced. A new option
(called expected value) exists for the mode indicator. Warnings will appear
when the mode is different from the value set in the options. A wizard
helps you to import your own regular expressions from an Excel file and
create your business indicators. Several bugs have been fixed.

small. For example, the overhead for a record is 16 bytes for a hash
database, and 5 bytes for a B+ tree database. Furthermore, the scalability
of Tokyo Cabinet is great. The database size can be up to 8EB.

Changes: Functions to count term frequency were added.

[059] - Vocatra 0.5.1
  by Oliver Sauder (http://freshmeat.net/users/sliverc/)
  Thu, Sep 4th 2008 23:04

Education

About: Vocatra is a console-based vocabulary trainer. It takes one or more
vocabulary files, queries you for each word, and lets you try to give the
correct answer. You can enable different learning modes. If you prefer to
learn sequentially it has an order mode. Otherwise, there is also a random
mode available.

Changes: This release has updated the man page description of how to
create vocabulary files. Unnecessary files of the deb and RPM package have
been removed.

[060] - Wireshark 1.0.3
  by Gerald Combs (http://freshmeat.net/users/gerald/)
  Thu, Sep 4th 2008 08:47

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Wireshark (formerly Ethereal) is a network protocol analyzer, or
"packet sniffer", that lets you capture and interactively browse the
contents of network frames. The goal of the project is to create a
commercial-quality packet analyzer for Unix, and the most useful packet
analyzer on any platform.

Changes: Security-related bugs in the NCP dissector, zlib compression
code, and Tektronix .rf5 file parser have been fixed. See the advisory for
details. WPA group key decryption is now supported. A bug that could cause
packets to be wrongly dissected as "Redback Lawful Intercept" has been
fixed.

[062] - Xapian and Omega 1.0.8
  by Olly Betts (http://freshmeat.net/users/OllyBetts/)
  Thu, Sep 4th 2008 13:23

Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Xapian is a search engine library, scalable to collections
containing hundreds of millions of documents. It's written in C++ with
bindings for Perl, Python, PHP, Java, Tcl, C#, and Ruby. It is a highly
adaptable toolkit that allows developers to easily add advanced indexing
and search facilities to their own applications. It supports the
Probabilistic Information Retrieval model and also a rich set of boolean
query operators. Omega is a Web search application built upon the Xapian
library. It can index a Web server's document tree (including HTML, PDF,
OpenOffice, MS Word/Excel/Powerpoint/Works, WordPerfect, RTF, PS, etc.), or
data exported from arbitrary sources (e.g. SQL databases).

Changes: The Flint backend no longer leaves stray Btree entries in some
cases when all postings for a term are removed, and it correctly handles a
table created lazily after the database has had commits. Adding or
replacing a document is now O(n) in the number of values it has. The Python
bindings preserve exceptions thrown from Python subclasses of Xapian
classes, and don't leak memory in the xapian.Query constructor. Omindex
handles character encodings specified by meta http-equiv=... better,
handles the HTML 5 meta charset=... alternative, and converts meta tag
parameters to UTF-8.

[063] - Yakuake 2.9.4
  by Eike Hein (http://freshmeat.net/users/eikehein/)
  Thu, Sep 4th 2008 13:39

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals

About: Yakuake is a drop-down terminal emulator based on KDE Konsole. It
features smoothly rolling down from the top of your screen, a tabbed
interface, configurable dimensions and animation speed, a skinnable GUI,
and a sophisticated D-Bus interface.

Changes: This version introduces a new application icon designed to fit
into the KDE 4 default Oxygen icon set. A background tinting option was
added to give more control over the appearance of translucent areas of an
interface skin. A rare bug related to moving tabs was fixed. The bundled
KDE 4 FAQ document was updated.

[064] - ziproxy 2.5.9_BETA (Beta)
  by Daniel Mealha Cabrita (http://freshmeat.net/users/dancab/)
  Thu, Sep 4th 2008 17:09

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: Ziproxy is a high-performance forwarding (non-caching) HTTP proxy
that gzips text and HTML files, and reduces the size of images by
converting them to lower quality JPEGs or JPEG 2000. It is intended to
increase the speed for low-speed Internet connections (mobile, dial-up,
other). It's suitable for both home and professional usage. Ziproxy is
fully configurable and also features transparent proxy mode, HTML/JS/CSS
optimization, operation in daemon mode, a detailed access log with
compression statistics, basic authentication, and more.

Changes: An ad blocker has been added. Authenticated proxy connections
logs now identify the username. Exception list support has been added for
the BindOutgoing option.
