Information Management :: Records Management
About: Animal Shelter Manager is a complete computer solution for animal
sanctuaries, rescue shelters, and veterinary surgery clinics. It features
complete animal and owner management, document generation, flexible
reporting, charts, Internet Web site publishing, and more.
Changes: This release fixes the last of the Mac issues. Additional
permissions are now supported and a new Web build allows ASM to run from a
Web server as a Java applet. Finally, a much-needed splash screen shows
startup progress.

by Phil Endecott (http://freshmeat.net/users/endecotp/)
Tue, Oct 28th 2008 13:19
Communications :: WAP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals
About: Anyterm provides a terminal emulator on a Web page using Javascript
and a server daemon. The daemon typically runs behind an HTTP proxy; it
forks a shell and communicates with the script using XMLHTTP on port 80 or
securely using SSL. This provides you with shell access to your machine
from almost any Web browser, even when firewalls are in the way. The
my.anyterm.org service provides access without the need to install anything
on your servers.
Changes: This version fixes two build bugs, one affecting SuSE users, and
works around a probable Firefox 3 bug that had caused an unnecessary
horizontal scrollbar to be shown. This version also builds on Mac OS X.

by hadji (http://freshmeat.net/users/hadji/)
Tue, Oct 28th 2008 18:17
System :: Archiving
About: The artiPACS (Art in a Picture Archive) is a digital picture
archive. It has two main modules: the archive and the broker. The Picture
Archive module consists of a file-transfer server, a reference repository,
and a utility to upload photos. Since the archive uses version control, you
can see collections evolve over time. The Broker exposes the collections to
the users. The mipmip client is a portable graphical user interface, using
3D technology to browse and view high-resolution images.
Changes: Proxy-support, fullscreen, mouse-release, and a
crash-with-connection-lost were fixed in the source code, but not in the
Win32 binary. Documentation was added on the homepage.

by Dan (http://freshmeat.net/users/danleweb/)
Tue, Oct 28th 2008 13:08
System :: Archiving :: Backup
Utilities
About: Back In Time is a simple backup system for the GNOME desktop
inspired by the "flyback project" and "TimeVault". The backup is done by
taking snapshots of a specified set of directories. All you have to do is
configure: where to save snapshot, what directories to backup, and when a
backup should be done (manually, every hour, every day, every week, or
every month). It acts as a "user mode" backup system. This means that you
can backup and restore only folders to which you have write access.
Changes: Integration with GNOME icons was improved. The last path is
remembered. The month is capitalized in the timeline.

System :: Monitoring
About: check_hpasm is a plugin for Nagios which checks the hardware health
of Hewlett-Packard Proliant servers. To accomplish this, you must have
installed the hpasm package. The plugin checks the health of processors,
power supplies, memory modules, fans, CPU- and board-temperatures, and
alerts you if one of these components is faulty or operates outside its
normal parameters.
Changes: The plugin now runs faster through a decreased amount of
transferred oids. The --ignore-fan-redundancy switch was added. SNMP memory
checking was rewritten for better reliability.

Tue, Oct 28th 2008 13:18
System :: Diagnostics
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
About: check_logfiles is a plugin for Nagios which checks logfiles for
defined patterns. It is capable of detecting logfile rotation. If you tell
it how the rotated archives look, it will also examine these files. Unlike
check_logfiles, traditional logfile plugins were not aware of the gap which
could occur, so under some circumstances they ignored what had happened
between their checks. A configuration file is used to specify where to
search, what to search, and what to do if a matching line is found.
Changes: A bug in scriptparams with CL_TAG was fixed. A bug was fixed in
rotating::uniform and macros. A bug was fixed in Windows scriptpath.
Relative pathnames for configuration files are now possible.

[011] - Common UNIX Printing System 1.4b1
by Michael Sweet (http://freshmeat.net/users/easysw/)
Tue, Oct 28th 2008 04:14
Internet
Printing
Software Development :: Libraries
About: CUPS provides a portable printing layer for Unix(r)-based operating
systems. It has been developed to promote a standard printing solution for
all Unix vendors and users. CUPS provides the System V and Berkeley command
line interfaces, and uses the Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP") as the
basis for managing print jobs and queues. The Line Printer Daemon (LPD)
Server Message Block (SMB), and AppSocket (a.k.a. JetDirect) protocols are
also supported with reduced functionality. CUPS adds network printer
browsing and PostScript Printer Description ("PPD") based printing options
to support real world printing under UNIX. It includes an image file RIP
that supports printing of image files to non-PostScript printers. A
customized version of GNU Ghostscript 7.05 for CUPS called ESP Ghostscript
is available separately to support printing of PostScript files within the
CUPS driver framework. Sample drivers for Dymo, EPSON, HP, and OKIDATA
printers are included that use these filters.
Changes: This release has over 65 changes and new features compared to
CUPS 1.3.x.

Tue, Oct 28th 2008 12:54
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
System :: Monitoring
About: ExtSQL is not a new database server. It is a significant set of
independently developed software additions and patches to the existing
source code of both MySQL and PostgreSQL. It provides a new set of SQL
language features that make it easy for a DBA to monitor and audit activity
on a busy server and account for activity by user, database, or even
connecting client host. It even includes the ability to store historical
usage data in amounts and time intervals specified by the DBA. It is not a
separate monitoring utility, but built into the core of both servers.
Changes: Complete patch sets for SUSE 10 are now supported on both on x86
and x86_64 architectures. Solaris 10 is supported on SPARC architectures.

Tue, Oct 28th 2008 18:22
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Physics
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: The purpose of the glideinWMS is to provide a simple way to access
the Grid resources. To achieve this without reinventing the wheel,
glideinWMS is a Glidein-based WMS (Workload Management System) that works
on top of Condor. Once setup, final users can submit regular Condor jobs to
the local queue and the glidein factory will provide the computing
resources behind the scenes. From the final user point of view, the Condor
pool just magically grows and shrinks as needed.
Changes: This version adds a flag to factory that allows or requires
proxies from the frontend. There are bugfixes to the node blacklisting
code, Squid proxy handling, and the installer.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio
Multimedia :: Video
Software Development :: Libraries
About: The GNU Compact Disc Input and Control library encapsulates CD-ROM
reading and control for applications wishing to be oblivious to the OS- and
device-dependent properties of a CD-ROM. It provides an API for access to
SCSI-MMC (multimedia commands) and support for CD image types like BIN/CUE,
cdrdao's TOC, and Nero's NRG, which gives applications using the library
the ability to read disc images as though they were CDs. ISO-9660
filesystem support is included, as are utility programs for displaying CD
and CD-ROM drive information, reading the blocks of a CD, and extracting
files from an ISO-9660 filesytem image. cdparanoia is also included.
Changes: Nero disk image handling is more complete in the areas of CD-Text
processing, DAO in reading audio sectors, and ISRC processing. ISO 9660
time getting and setting have been made reentrant and some bugs were fixed.
Some Mac OS X and mingw32 cross-compiling bugs were fixed.

[025] - Himerge 0.30.30
by Luis Araujo (http://freshmeat.net/users/LuisAraujo/)
Tue, Oct 28th 2008 04:38
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions
About: Himerge is a GUI for emerge (Gentoo's Portage system) written in
Haskell using gtk2hs. The main idea is to simplify browsing the entire
portage tree, and allow running the most basic and common options from the
emerge command. It also offers several handy tools, like global and local
use flags browsers, inspired by UFED (the Gentoo Linux USE flags editor).
It also uses eix (a small utility for searching ebuilds with indexing for
fast results) as a back-end command to show package information in HTML/CSS
format, so you can access a package's Web site for a quick glance.
Changes: This release fixes an important bug in the packages branch
directory backup creation. Many different shortcut keys have been added to
access most of the Himerge operations and work around the most important
widgets (surfing the browser views, closing panel tabs, and jumping to the
package search box). A single new module is included for easy shortcut keys
configuration. The documentation has been updated to reflect the new keys
functionality.

Tue, Oct 28th 2008 18:22
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
About: HTMLTemplate converts (X)HTML templates into simple object models
controlled by callback functions defined in your Python code. Conceptually
similar to DOM (but much simpler), it provides complete separation between
HTML markup and presentation logic. It boasts an excellent power-to-weight
ratio thanks to its lightweight DOM-inspired design: the implementation and
API are extremely simple and compact, yet powerful, flexible, and easy to
modify and/or use.
Changes: This release makes minor API improvements and converts all
documentation and tutorials to HTML format.

Space". It is designed to be fast, simple, convenient, and easily
extensible (you can easily integrate your own dynamic content with the rest
of the site). It should handle well both small and big sites, including
seamless multi-domain handling. All data is stored as plain text files
without need of a database and there is support for blog directories with
automatic RSS feed generation (including feed aggregation).
Changes: More major features and improvements for 1.0. A Wiki module
(dirdir). Cleanup of /bin/. controller.rc has been renamed werc.rc. Big
improvements to the blogging and user auth modules. md_cache.rc has been
converted into a generic caching system that can cache any file-associated
data. Much faster and cleaner menu implementation. Many bugfixes and
improvements.

by Dougal Campbell (http://freshmeat.net/users/emc3/)
Tue, Oct 28th 2008 18:24
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: News/Diary
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: WordPress is a state-of-the-art, semantic, personal publishing
platform with a focus on aesthetics, Web standards, and usability. It was
born out of a desire for an elegant, well-architected personal publishing
system. While primarily geared towards functioning as a Weblog, WordPress
is also a flexible CMS capable of managing many types of Web sites. In
addition to the basic blog functions, it also has an integrated link
manager (e.g. for blogrolls), file attachments, XFN support, support for
stand-alone pages, Atom and RSS feeds for both content and comments,
blogging API support (Atom Publishing Protocol, Blogger, MetaWeblog, and
Movable Type APIs), spam blocking features, advanced cruft-free URL
generation, a flexible theme system, and an advanced plugin API.
Changes: This version addresses a vulnerability in the included Snoopy
library. WordPress uses Snoopy to fetch the feeds shown in the Dashboard.
If you don't want to download the whole release to get the security fix,
individual files are available for download to patch your 2.6.2
installation.
