[010] - ColorDiff 1.0.5
by Dave Ewart (http://freshmeat.net/users/daveewart/)
Mon, Mar 28th 2005 14:38
Software Development
Text Processing :: Filters
Utilities
About: ColorDiff is a wrapper for diff. It produces the same output as
diff, but with coloured syntax highlighting at the commandline to improve
readability. The output is similar to how a diff-generated patch might
appear in Vim or Emacs with the appropriate syntax highlighting options
enabled. The colour schemes can be read from a central configuration file
or from a local user ~/.colordiffrc file.
Changes: Improved efficiency for diff-type detection, and the addition of
a new colour area called 'cvsstuff' that allows an additional colour
definition for this type of output. 'long colordiff colour options' has
been removed, since it appears to conflict with the use of additional diff
command line options. This change also fixes the bug, which means that
colordiff returns the 'diff' return value correctly. Inclusion of a
separate 'cdiff' shell script for colouring compressed and URL-based
diffs.

Software Development
Software Development :: Documentation
About: Doxygen is a cross-platform, JavaDoc-like documentation system for
C++, C, Objective-C, C#, Java, IDL, and PHP. Doxygen can be used to
generate an on-line class browser (in HTML) and/or an off-line reference
manual (in LaTeX or RTF) from a set of source files. Doxygen can also be
configured to extract the code-structure from undocumented source files.
This includes dependency graphs, class diagrams and hyperlinked source
code. This type of information can be very useful to quickly find your way
in large source distributions.
Changes: Support for generating HTML documentation pages for individual
class or file members was added. A new \subpage command has been added to
allow the creation of a hierarchy of documentation pages in a more
convenient way. The first-pass parser for comment blocks has been
rewritten to make handling of structural commands such as \class and
\section easier and more consistent and to serve as a first step towards
supporting alternative language parsers. As always, a large number of bugs

Information Management
Information Management :: Records Management
About: enetman is a network asset management Web application written in
PHP with a MySQL backend. Its intended use is to maintain a structured
list of servers that can be cross referenced by location, manufacturer,
vendor, CPU, and OS. It allows for a user to create and maintain
locations, manufacturers, and vendors along with contact names and phone
numbers to each. It contains a device log that tracks issues that servers
have had, a list of network ports on the server along with IP information
(IP, subnet, gateway, DNS, network card make/model and MAC) for each port
(this includes aliased ports), and a software manager that keeps tabs on
expiration dates of software. It enables the user to create a directory
tree with files that can then be attached to locations, vendors,
manufacturers, software, or servers. It maintains a list of all software
installed on a server and how many licenses are allocated to it. A Perl
script run from cron emails users when a license is about to expire.
Changes: This release fixes URLs for locations, vendors, and
manufacturers, adds a Nagios plugin, turns off error reporting, adds a
debug statement to turn on error reporting, and stops using
register_globals.

by tof (http://freshmeat.net/users/cvollrath/)
Mon, Mar 28th 2005 05:39
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: GvTags is a Groovy tag library. It allows writing Web applications
with Java ServerPages (JSP) in Groovy. It might be for the Groovy
programming language what the combination of JSTL and Struts is for Java.
You can use Groovy objects in a JSP as beans. It is possible to embed
Groovy code in a JSP. It also includes logic tags that use Groovy as their
expression language. It uses the GroovyScriptEngine, which ensures
automatic recompilation of Groovy code in GvTags pages and of external
Groovy classes. It caches compiled Groovy classes and makes execution
quite fast.
Changes: GvTags now contains about sixteen tags. This makes it complete
enough to write small Web applications. GvTags now comes with a set of
examples which show how to build Web applications in Groovy. This version
is based on Groovy-1.0-beta-10 (classic parser).

System :: Installation/Setup
About: mkCDrec (Make CD-ROM Recovery) makes a bootable (El Torito)
disaster recovery image, including backups of the Linux system to one or
more CD-ROM(s) (multi-volume sets). Otherwise, the backups can be stored
on another disk, NFS/CIFS disk, or (remote) tape. After a disk crash or
system intrusion, the system can be booted from the CD-ROM and one can
restore the complete system as it was. It also features disk cloning,
which allows one to restore a disk to another disk (the destination disk
does not have to be of the same size, as it calculates the partition
layout itself). Currently, ext2, ext3, minix, MS-DOS, FAT, VFAT, Reiserfs,
XFS, and JFS filesystems are supported. It can restore disks in Software
RAID and LVM mode. It supports the One Button Disaster Recovery (OBDR)
mode, which simulates a bootable CD-ROM on tape.
Changes: Some minor bugs were fixed. The bootloader detection code has
been rewritten. Two new scripts were added to the contributions directory:
tsm-restore.sh and dp-restore.sh for using mkCDrec in combination with
external backups stored on a Tivoli Storage Manager system or Data
Protector server. A lot of restore functions were moved out of the scripts
and are now in the common libraries to improve code maintenance.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3
About: Random Music is a GUI front-end to mpg321 and id3v2, written in
Java using the Swing UI toolkit. It maintains a flat database of MP3
tracks, detailed genres, and weights, and generates a weighted random
playlist from the user-selected genres. The ID3v2 fields
(title/artist/album), detailed genre, and weight (0-9) for the
currently-playing track can be edited, and tracks can be removed from the
future playlist. For example, a user can select only tracks with a minimum
weight of 5 from the subgenres "Pop - 1970s" and "R&B - 1970s", and the
playlist will adjust accordingly.

About: rdiff-backup backs up one directory to another. The target
directory ends up a copy of the source directory, but extra reverse diffs
are stored in a special directory so you can still recover files lost some
time ago. The idea is to combine the best features of a mirror and an
incremental backup. rdiff-backup can also operate in a bandwidth-
efficient manner over a pipe, like rsync. Thus you can use rdiff-backup
and ssh to securely back up to a remote location, and only the differences
will be transmitted. It can also handle symlinks, device files,
permissions, ownership, etc., so it can be used on the entire file system.

[081] - SQL Relay 0.36
by David Muse (http://freshmeat.net/users/mused/)
Mon, Mar 28th 2005 14:18

About: SQL Relay is a persistent database connection pooling, proxying,
and load balancing system for Unix and Linux supporting ODBC, Oracle,
MySQL, mSQL, PostgreSQL, Sybase, MS SQL Server, IBM DB2, Interbase, Lago,
SQLite, and MS Access, and with APIs for C, C++, Perl, Perl-DBD, Python,
Python-DB, Zope, PHP, PHP Pear DB, Ruby, Ruby-DBD, Java and TCL, drop-in
replacement libraries for MySQL and PostgreSQL, command line clients, a
GUI configuration tool, and extensive documentation. The APIs support
advanced database operations such as binding variables, multi-row fetches,
client side result set caching, and suspended transactions. It is ideal for
speeding up database-driven Web-based applications, accessing databases
from unsupported platforms, migrating between databases, distributing
access to replicated databases, and throttling database access.
Changes: Many bugs and crashes have been fixed. An MDBTools backend has
been added. Python thread locking problems have been fixed. Sqlrsh can run
scripts now. ODBC support has been improved. The PHP API cleans up
connections and cursors without needing to register a shutdown handler.

Mon, Mar 28th 2005 08:15
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Steel Bank Common Lisp is a development environment for Common
Lisp, with excellent support for the ANSI standard: garbage collection,
lexical closures, powerful macros, strong dynamic typing, incremental
compilation, and the famous Common Lisp Object System (multimethods and
all). It also includes many extensions, such as native threads, socket
support, a statistical profiler, programmable streams, and more. These are
all available through an integrated, interactive native compiler which
feels like an interpreter. SBCL is unique in being a multiplatform native
compiler which bootstraps itself completely from source, using a C
compiler and any other ANSI Common Lisp implementation.
Changes: Thread support for non-NPTL systems has been removed, since
locking is buggy and unreliable. The optimization policy is now handled in
the manner which ANSI specifies. Disassembling X86-64 code is now more
robust. Single-precision floating point numbers can now be represented as
immediates on X86-64.

About: Web Performance Trainer is a load testing and stress testing tool

Changes: The minor feature added in this release is the ability to record
with Firefox. To aid in debugging server connection errors, the
connection-attempt-duration has been added to error messages when the

[091] - Wi.Ser 0.6.8
by dvdw (http://freshmeat.net/users/dvdw/)
Mon, Mar 28th 2005 08:08
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Wi.Ser is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables an
application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server Swing
app, or as a Web app without any change. It includes a mixed deployment
mode, which supports one server to serve Swing clients and Web clients at
the same time. The framework uses XML to define an application's GUI. It
provides a common widget-based, object-oriented programming interface for
Web and Swing GUIs, which prevents the developer from struggling with HTML
and HTTP or with the internals of Swing. For Swing client/server
applications the client/server split as well as the client/server
communication is handled transparently by the framework. The project
includes a GUI builder that is based on the framework's functionality
(screenshot, deployed as a Web/HTML application).
Changes: This release implements lazy loading for swing widgets, which
means that forms are submitted on demand from the server to the client.
This feature brings a significant speed up for swing GUIs and a lower
memory footprint. A bug in forEach has been fixed, and forEach is able to
match names and tags with regular expressions. The tutorial has been
enhanced with two new chapters, and errors in the WebWindow management
were corrected. A new widget called templateSection has been added to
support embedded HTML.
