Internet
Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: AlternC is automatic hosting software suite based on the Valentin
Lacambre hosting system and Debian. It features a PHP-based administration
interface and shell and Perl scripts that manage server contents. It can
manage email, Web, and list hosting. It is available in French, English,
and Spanish.

Changes: This release adds mail-domain aliases, changepass to the webmail,
and a smtp/sasl/tls table for postfix. The install process works perfectly
with Debian Sarge, and the plugins can be installed easily. Users are
advised to upgrade.

[004] - Bandwidth Management Tools 200504060857 (Development)
  by Nigel Kukard (http://freshmeat.net/users/nkukard/)
  Wed, Apr 6th 2005 04:42

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
System :: Logging

About: Bandwidth Management Tools is a total bandwidth management solution
for Linux and can be used for firewalling, traffic graphing, and shaping.
It is not based on any currently-available bandwidth management software
and supports packet queues, bursting, complex traffic flow hierarchies,
flow groups, traffic logging, and a simple real-time monitoring front-end.

Changes: The masq tag is now supported in the NAT section. Memory cleanup
issues in the XML parser were fixed and XML library version checking was
removed. A check for the presence of the configuration file was added. An
error is now thrown if invalid tags are encountered in the <nat> section,
and checks for NAT tag parameter validity were added. A bug where comments
in the NAT section created an endless loop in bwm_firewall was fixed.

[005] - BitDefender Mail Protection 1.6.2 (Sendmail)
  by BitDefender (http://freshmeat.net/users/linuxdefender/)
  Wed, Apr 6th 2005 01:05

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents

About: BitDefender Mail Protection is a powerful mail filtering solution
that provides antivirus and antispam capabilities to Linux mail servers.
Both sent and received messages are scanned in real-time, avoiding
possible infections and preventing anyone from sending an infected
message. It claims a 100% detection rate for all viruses in the wild
through its powerful scanning engines, which are certified by prestigious
testing labs.

Changes: The sudo dependency was removed by bundling bdsu, a stripped down
version of sudo. The antispam filter now has support for image-based spam
messages. Some minor threading and statistics bugs were fixed. The "bd"
script was rewritten to be fully POSIX compliant and to use bdsu instead
of su when starting processes as different users. By default, plugins for
BitDefender HIVE analyser technology are now included.

[006] - BitTorrent 4.0.1
  by Moritz Barsnick (http://freshmeat.net/users/barsnick/)
  Wed, Apr 6th 2005 09:42

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
System :: Software Distribution

About: BitTorrent is a tool for copying files from one machine to another.
FTP punishes sites for being popular. Since all uploading is done from one
place, a popular site needs big iron and big bandwidth. With BitTorrent,
clients automatically mirror files they download, making the publisher's
burden almost nothing.

Changes: This release introduces an all new queue-based user interface
(based on GTK+ instead of wxWidgets). It also features various interface
improvements. Many options are now modifiable from the interface,
including upload rate. Statistics are now visible in the GUI. Performance
was improved. BitTorrent packets are now marked as bulk data to make
traffic shaping easier. Various bugs were fixed. The license has changed
to the "BitTorrent Open Source License".

[007] - C++ ResourcePool 0.99.10
  by mws (http://freshmeat.net/users/mws/)
  Wed, Apr 6th 2005 13:28

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries

About: C++ ResourcePool is a library which can be used to pool resources
of every kind. It can also be used as an abstraction layer by providing a
unique API for different resources of similar resource types; the most
prominent examples are SQL databases. It includes a convenient way to
access MySQL and Oracle databases in the same way, so that changing from
MySQL to Oracle or vice-versa does not need big code changes.

Changes: Some portability improvements have been made. This release
compiles on more systems and has better ISO C++ compliance. Tests were
successful on Linux and FreeBSD systems with gcc 3.2 upwards and icc 8.1.

[009] - Conary 0.50.9
  by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
  Wed, Apr 6th 2005 20:55

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: Bugfixes were made to --info output and the progress display in
the temporary yuck utility. findTroves() was moved to findtrove.py and was
reworked to be more modular. getSourceVersion() now correctly handles
branched binaries by looking up the branch to find the source component.
StreamSet and StringStream were reimplemented in C.

About: Dada Mail is an intuitive, Web-based email list management system,
which runs on any hosting account that can execute custom CGI scripts.
Dada Mail is also a conceptual art project.

Changes: This release added a new Email Formatting Engine, VERP support

Database
Database :: API
Database :: Database Engines/Servers

About: Daffodil DB is a SQL-99 specification compliant, lightweight,
Java-based relational database engine (RDBMS). It supports almost all
constructs of SQL 99 (including triggers, views, constraints, UDT, stored
procedures, etc.), supports distributed transactions (XA), provides a
complete JDBC 3.0 driver (including support for optional features like
save points, rowsets, UDT, XA, connection pooling, etc.), and can run in
embedded or server mode. It can be included as a jar file in any Java
application. Daffodil DB includes Daffodil DB Browser, a GUI-based
database management tool that can be used to carry out all database
operations such as creating a database, creating database objects,
executing SQL statements, and manipulating data, browser database objects,
etc.

Changes: Performance enhancements were made for the following
functionalities: prepared statement caching for select queries at the JDBC
driver level, select query with the order by clause, retrieving objects
from java.sql.ResultSet, select query with user defined functions, and
time reduction in index navigation.

[013] - DB Solo 1.0.0
  by DB Solo (http://freshmeat.net/users/mhantula/)
  Wed, Apr 6th 2005 05:33

Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Systems Administration

About: DB Solo is a powerful database development and management tool for
developers and DBAs. It has an intuitive user interface that allows you
to explore and manage your database objects as well as execute ad-hoc
queries. It supports Oracle, MySQL, Sybase, DB2, and MS SQL Server. In
addition to viewing and managing objects such as schemas, tables,
indexes, views, tablespaces, users, roles, sessions, and stored
procedures, you can view, edit, print, and export data from tables or the
results of queries. You can also graphically view foreign key
relationships.

Changes: Identity columns are now supported for MS SQL Server, Sybase,
DB2, and MySQL. When creating a table, you can specify which column(s)
will be identity columns. When inserting a new row, you can leave an
identity column's value blank and it will not be part of the insert
statement. Database locks are now shown for Oracle, MS SQL Server, Sybase,
and DB2. Depending on the vendor, you can see information such as the
session ID of the lock holder, lock mode, type of lock, and the
object/page that is locked.

[015] - Design Pattern Toolkit 3.0
  by alphaWorks (http://freshmeat.net/users/alphaworks/)
  Wed, Apr 6th 2005 20:44

Utilities

About: The Design Pattern Toolkit is an Eclipse-enabled tool for
generating applications based on customizable model-driven architecture
patterns. This plug-in can speed up the development of common types of
applications by the use of patterns that capture best (or current)
practices for the design and implementation of those applications. Users
apply patterns to information encoded in XML files to generate multiple
Eclipse resources of multiple types that together make up an application.
The toolkit has a component for pattern-based resource generation as well
as a component that supports pattern development and distribution.

Changes: Enhancements and fixes were made. This version runs on Eclipse
3.0, RAD, and RSA. An updated "Exemplar Analysis" tool edits a model of a
transformation from which DPTK transformations can be generated.

  Wed, Apr 6th 2005 05:00

Education

Text Editors

About: Dictator is an on-screen reading application for text files that
was intended for use with The Gutenberg Project. The problem with these
texts is that reading them on screen is not particularly pleasant and
printing them out is worse. Dictator employs the Rapid Serial Visual
Projection (RSVP) method of displaying words consecutively in the same
place, at a user-controllable rate. In theory, this method prevents
unconscious re-reading of adjacent text and decreases the tendency of the
reader to oralise the text, allowing for increased reading speeds.

About: Dmx4linux is a driver package for accessing DMX interfaces with
Linux. DMX is a protocol for controlling devices supporting DMX512 like
dimmers, moving lights, or scanners. Many commercial and free interfaces
are supported. The package includes some simple console and X applications
to test the drivers and your hardware immediately.

Changes: 4 new USB interfaces and one new PCI interface were added. The
tools were updated and lots of bugs have been fixed, the most nasty being
the "last channel bug" which did not let you set the 512th channel. This
is the last release for Linux 2.4 kernels. Future development will

Education
Games/Entertainment :: Simulation
Scientific/Engineering

About: Gravit is a gravity simulator. It uses simple Newtonian physics
using the Barnes-Hut N-body algorithm. Although the main goal of Gravit is
to be as accurate as possible, it also creates beautiful looking gravity
patterns. It records the history of each particle so that it can animate
and display a path of its travels. At any stage you can rotate your view
in 3D and zoom in and out. Gravit uses OpenGL with SDL, SDL_ttf, and
SDL_image.

Changes: The major changes in this version are sprite particle effects and
blending modes. Some other changes are an option to display the oct tree,
better console control, a new color mode (acceleration based), and the
ability to take screen shots. Many new commands, keyboard shortcuts, and
bugfixes were added.

About: Groovy is an agile, dynamic language for the JVM which combines
many features from languages like Python, Ruby, and Smalltalk and makes
them available to Java developers using a Java-like syntax. It is designed
to help get things done on the Java platform in a quicker, more concise,
and fun way. It can be used as an alternative compiler to javac to
generate standard Java bytecode to be used by any Java project or it can
be used dynamically as an alternative language, such as for scripting Java
objects, templating, or writing unit test cases.

Changes: This release adds the new JSR parser for standardizing the Groovy

Changes: A bug in the edge handle has been fixed to correct handling of
model callbacks and placement of labels on scaled graphs. An initial label
bounds for extra labels is now set, and a new helper method to has been
added to the JGraph class. DefaultEdge.clone now copies over the
references to the source and target port, whereas previously it just
assigned the references null.

System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: multihomed is a script that can detect when your primary Internet
uplink goes down and switch to a backup uplink. It's smarter than many
similar scripts: it continuously pings several hosts around the Internet
using both uplinks, and elects the best one as primary. You can define the
priority with which uplinks are tried. This can be very useful if you have
a per-traffic contract on one of your uplinks and a flat-traffic contract
on another one: you can configure multihomed to use the per-traffic uplink
only if the other one is not working. It runs as a daemon, and you can
define the interval between consecutive checks. It can detect failures in
your ISP's uplinks too; by checking multiple remote hosts around the
Internet, you can tell if your ISP is fully working or not. This is much
more reliable than simply pinging a single server or (worse) your default
router. It is very flexible: you can easily customize the commands to
execute whenever one of the links goes down.

[056] - OpenSSH LDAP Public Key patch 0.3.2
  by Eric AUGE (http://freshmeat.net/users/eau/)
  Wed, Apr 6th 2005 04:41

System :: Systems Administration

About: The OpenSSH LDAP Public Key patch provides an easy way of
centralizing strong user authentication by using an LDAP server for
retrieving public keys instead of ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. It uses the
standard core.schema/nis.schema and strongAuthenticationUser object class,
which can simplify login centralization but could introduce serious
security flaws if the LDAP server is not correctly configured.

Changes: This release added support for LDAP server failover, LDAP
persistent connections, a rewrite and cleanup of the LDAP userkey
retrieval and group checks, renamed sshd_config lpk tokens, an easier
installation process, and various bugfixes.

management features. An included client gives the user visual feedback
about all actions with nice little popup windows.

Changes: This release reconfigures the trackpad much faster after typing
on the keyboard to prevent the cursor from unintentionally moving.
pbbuttonsd now uses the laptop-mode-tools package from Bart Samwel if it
is installed. The internal laptopmode.sh script will only be used as a
fallback. Some fixes were made for bugs that were reported in the Debian
bugtracker and also some not recorded there. The documentation was
extended and revised.

  Wed, Apr 6th 2005 07:49

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities

About: System Configuration Collector (SCC) is yet another configuration
collector. It consists of a client and a server part. The client collects
configuration data in a structured snapshot, compares the new snapshot
with the previous one, and adds differences to a logbook. Then the
snapshot and the logbook are converted to HTML for local inspection.
Optionally, the data can be sent to a system running the server software.
On the server, summaries of the data are generated, and search/compare
operations on the snapshots and logbooks are available via a Web
interface.

Changes: Split-file was implemented, allowing you to give each Oracle
instance its own snapshot and logbook. The collection of Oracle-related
data was extended. CSS was implemented for all HTML files. Several minor

About: Task Coach is a simple todo manager to manage personal tasks and
todo lists. It grew out of a frustration that well-known task managers,
such as those provided with Outlook or Lotus Notes, do not provide
facilities for composite tasks. Often, tasks and other things to do
consist of several activities. Task Coach is designed to deal with
composite tasks.

Changes: Hitting return or double click to edit efforts in the task editor
now works. Subtasks with the same name are no longer only visible once in
the task tree view. You can now hide composite tasks in the task list view
so that only leaf tasks are visible. A 'View' -> 'Tasks with subtasks' menu
item was added.

About: Metro is a tool designed to evaluate the difference between two
triangular meshes by computing the Hausdorff distance between the two
surfaces. Metro adopts an approximated approach based on surface sampling
and point-to-surface distance computation. The tool has been widely used
in the surface simplification research community (more than 140 citations
according to google scholar). The tool is built using the VCG library.

Changes: This release adds options for saving two ASCII CSV files with the
dump of the histogram of the error distribution between the two meshes
(useful for printing high-quality graphs).

feel more at home and extra features drawn from tcsh.

Changes: This is a bug fix release for the stable 4.2 series. It fixes a
few configuration problems, notably on Mac OS X, as well as a number of
other minor issues. There are also some upgrades to completion functions.
