A Look At Java Class Loading
by Kumar Matcha (http://www.jroller.com/page/kmatcha)
Section: Tutorials
Sat, May 14th 2005 00:00

Class loading is one of the most powerful mechanisms provided by the Java
Language Specification. All Java programmers should know how the class
loading mechanism works and what can be done to suit their needs. By
understanding the class loading mechanism, you can save time that would
otherwise be spent on debugging ClassNotFoundException,
ClassCastException, etc.

[001] - /etc/net Scripts 0.7.4
  by Pilot (http://freshmeat.net/users/infrastation/)
  Sat, May 14th 2005 12:12

System :: Boot :: Init
System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: /etc/net represents a new approach to Linux network configuration
tasks. Inspired by the limitations of traditional configuration
subsystems, /etc/net provides builtin support for configuration profiles,
interface name management, removable device support, full iproute2 command
set support, interface dependency resolution, and a QoS configuration
framework. /etc/net provides support for the following interface types:
Ethernet, WiFi (WEP), IPv6/IPv6 tunnels, PSK IPSec tunnels, VLAN, PLIP,
Ethernet bonding and bridging, traffic equalizer, Pent@NET, usbnet, and
PPP. Due to its modular design, support for new interface types can be
added without overall design changes.

Changes: Improvements were made to wpa_supplicant. An initial
auto-linkdetect whitelist was added. sysctl.conf is now also treated at
reload.

[002] - Axiomatic Multi-Platform C 1.2 (Mac OS X)
  by napi (http://freshmeat.net/users/napi/)
  Sat, May 14th 2005 03:53

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Axiomatic Multi-Platform C (AMPC) is a C IDE that generates Java
bytecode. It supports a very large subset of ANSI C (1989). It can be used
to develop new applications using C as well as port existing applications
written in C to run on JVM enabled devices. A JNI (JVM Native Interface)
feature is available for calling native C or C++ functions. Also, many
Java methods can be called from AMPC. The asm() directive can be used to
embed Jasmin assembly code within C source code.

Changes: Support for the 64-bit DOUBLE floating point type was added.

Internet :: Proxy Servers
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: BalanceNG is a professional software load balancing solution
running on Linux. It is small, fast, and easy to use and setup. It offers
session persistence, different distribution methods (Round Robin, Random,
Hash, and Least Resource) and a customizable UDP health check agent in
source code. It supports VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) to set
up high availability configurations on multiple nodes. It integrates pcap
packet dumping for debugging purposes and allows the implementation of a
"transparent forensic logging bridge". It supports "all service load
balancing" based on client IP address which allows most protocols to be

[012] - GNU ddrescue 1.0-pre2 (Development)
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Sat, May 14th 2005 13:27

System :: Recovery Tools

About: GNU ddrescue is a data recovery tool. It copies data from one file
or block device (hard disc, cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue
data in case of read errors. GNU ddrescue does not truncate the output
file if not asked to. So, every time you run it on the same output file,
it tries to fill in the gaps. The basic operation of GNU ddrescue is fully
automatic. That is, you don't have to wait for an error, stop the program,
read the log, run it in reverse mode, etc. If you use the logfile feature
of GNU ddrescue, the data is rescued very efficiently (only the needed
blocks are read). Also you can interrupt the rescue at any time and resume
it later at the same point.

Changes: Two small bugs have been corrected. One displayed an incorrect
initial input position when it is different from the initial output
position. The other sometimes made ddrescue perform a broader rescue than
requested.

About: The libevent API provides a mechanism to execute a callback
function when a specific event occurs on a file descriptor or after a
timeout has been reached. It is meant to replace the asynchronous event
loop found in event-driven network servers.

Changes: This release features performance improvements to select and

creates MIDI tracks for a soloist to perform over from a user-supplied
file containing chords and MMA directives. It is very versatile and
generates excellent tracks. It comes with an extensive user-extendable
library with a variety of patterns for various popular rhythms, an
extensive user manual, and several demo songs. It is a command line driven
program. It creates MIDI files which need a sequencer or MIDI file play
program.

Changes: A number of bugfixes were made. Many more system macros were
added. The ALLTRACKS command was added. Major fixes were made to chord
generation.

[029] - Peeranha42 0.9 (Chess)
  by eecid (http://freshmeat.net/users/eecid/)
  Sat, May 14th 2005 13:52

About: Peeranha42 is an all-in-one software solution for P2P networks. The
software consists of two components, the P42 Client and the P42 Development
Kit. The client is the core of the software package and has a special
pluggable architecture. Furthermore, it builds up the interface between
the P2P network of JXTA and plugins using P2P networks. Due to the fact
that developing a P2P application is generally much harder and time
expensive than developing a simple client-server application, the client
offers an abstract network layer for easy development of P2P applications
in the form of P42 Plugins in minimum time. Some plugins are available for
download.

Changes: If the Rendevous connection fails, the GUI is blocked. Chess
rules are fully implemented. The disconnect button was added. Options to
offer a draw or to resign a game were added. Multi-game-mode was fixed.
The GUI structure was changed. Saving and resuming games. Completed moves
are displayed in the GUI. A popup-menu is displayed when the right mouse
button is clicked. The ability to play MP3s was added.

[034] - PSMON 1.29
  by Nicola Worthington (http://freshmeat.net/users/nicolaw/)
  Sat, May 14th 2005 23:53

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: psmon is a Perl script which can be run as a stand-alone program or
a fully functional background daemon, capable of logging to syslog with
customisable email notification facilities. The user defines a set of
rules in an Apache-style plain text configuration file. These rules
describe what processes should always be running on the system, and any
limitations on concurrent instances, TTL, and maximum CPU/memory usage of
processes. psmon scans the UNIX process table and, using the set of rules
defined in the configuration file, will respawn any dead processes, and
slay or "deal with" any aggressive or illegal processes.

Changes: This release removes the Unix::Syslog dependency and uses stubs
in the <DATA> handle which will print messages to STDERR if Unix::Syslog
cannot be loaded. The overloading of the AdminEmail command line option
over other AdminEmail values was abstracted from the sendmail() method to
the calling code. The debug output code was tidied up, and may now be
enabled by setting the PSMon_DEBUG environment variable to a boolean true
value. More POD documentation was added.

Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: References for TeX and Friends is an ongoing project which provides
a help file for LaTeX (and its friends like ConTeXt, Metapost, Metafont,
etc.) using a state-of-the-art source format, DocBook/XML. Various output
formats can be generated from the source file. Anyone can write a
converter for any desired output format. Because the source file is XML,
the easiest way to do this might be to use XSLT.

Changes: A consistent naming scheme for IDs is now used to ease the use of
this reference for other projects (such as "Kile"). A new section, called
"float", was added in the "LaTeX" chapter.

  by Kyle (http://freshmeat.net/users/kyles/)
  Sat, May 14th 2005 03:54

System :: Archiving :: Compression
Utilities

About: sdelta analyzes two files and outputs the difference. It applies
the difference or delta file to the first of the original files to
construct a bit for bit clone of the second file. It is optimized for use
with source tarballs, and also contains sdreq, the client for the sdelta
Public Patch Repository. The PPR can generate on demand source upgrade and
downgrade patches for over 250,000 version specific source tarballs. By
using sdreq you can acquire new source tarballs from the PPR several times
faster and with only 15% of the downloading that you currently do.

Changes: The Public Patch Repository was moved to berlios.de. The included
client for the PPR was updated. This release contains enhancements for
generating patches on systems with limited memory. Instead of using system
swap, sdelta and sdelta2 now automatically perform swapping to temporary
files in /tmp. This improves patch generation speed, and as long as /tmp
resides on a physical file system and not a tmpfs virtual file system,
this modification allows patches of very large source tarballs to be
generated on boxes with a fraction of the memory one would expect to be
required.

About: Task Coach is a simple todo manager to manage personal tasks and
todo lists. It grew out of a frustration that well-known task managers,
such as those provided with Outlook or Lotus Notes, do not provide
facilities for composite tasks. Often, tasks and other things to do
consist of several activities. Task Coach is designed to deal with
composite tasks.

Changes: This release adds the ability to sort tasks by subject next to
sorting by due date. In addition, a new date picker control is used to set
dates. Turning columns on or off in the task list view can now also be done
