[003] - ASLinux Desktop 2.0 Official
  by Activa Sistemas (http://freshmeat.net/users/abeirp/)
  Tue, May 31st 2005 05:43

About: ASLinux Desktop is a desktop-oriented distribution based on Debian
and aimed at Spanish-speaking users. Unlike the Debian base, it restricts
itself to one application for each task, simplifying the choices faced by
users. Is has good support for modern hardware (SATA disks, Bluetooth,
Wi-Fi, laptops, PDAs, mobile phones, all kinds of USB devices, etc.) It
has a number of powerful administration tools, all integrated in KDE's
Control Center, and Wizards to ease the installation of non-free software
that couldn't be included on the CDs, like Acrobat Reader and Microsoft
TrueType fonts. It has special support for Windows applications through
Wine, Cedega, and CrossOffice.

Changes: This release includes 2 CDs, one of which boots up with a basic
desktop system, and the other includes addons. A smart installation system
was implemented. The partition manager (qtparted) is accessible within the
installation system. The kernel was updated to 2.4.30. The winetools
control panel, Cedega and Crossoffice demos, and wizards to install third
party software are included.

[004] - Babylon Java Chat 2.1
  by Andy McLaughlin (http://freshmeat.net/users/andymcl/)
  Tue, May 31st 2005 05:53

Communications :: Chat

About: Babylon Java Chat is a client and server combo that allows groups
to chat and draw over any TCP/IP connection. The client can be run either
as a standalone Java application or as an applet launched from a WWW
document. It features public and private chatting and drawing, chat rooms,
instant and answering-machine style messaging, and console paging. The
drawing canvas enables users to draw freehand, or to create lines,
rectangles, ovals, or fonted text, or to paste images from files.

Changes: In this release, the Applet client can embed in Web pages, there
is internationalization support (Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Dutch,
French, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish, and Turkish translations
included), there were some connectivity bugfixes (with automatic silent
reconnect), the application client can save the canvas as a bitmap image,
users can click and drag to resize the drawing canvas vs. the chat text,
there is a better instant-messaging interface, and the client window is
easier to use.

[005] - BashDiff 1.17
  by William Park (http://freshmeat.net/users/opengeometry/)
  Tue, May 31st 2005 23:39

Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Shells

About: Bash.Diff is a patch against Bash that incorporates many useful
features from Awk, Python, Zsh, Ksh, and others. In the main core, it adds
the following: new brace expansion {a..b}, new parameter expansion
${var|...}, new command substitution $(=...), extended for, while, and
until loops, extended case statement, new try-block with integer
exception, and new here document <&lt+. As builtin commands, it adds the
following: sscanf(3), <string.h>, and <ctype.h> wrappers, a variety of
array and regex(3) operations, GDBM, SQLite, PostgreSQL, and MySQL
database interfaces, an HTML template engine (BASP), stack/queue
operations on positional parameters and arrays, Expat XML parser
interface, simple x-y character plot, DOS line support, and simple Awk
emulation.

Changes: This release cleans up the 'match' builtin, and returns more
complete array elements for the '-3' option. The builtin 'gdbm' now
returns immediately on any error or test failure. For stack/ queue
operations, 'pp_trim' deletes items from the end. Also, 'binary' has been
added to convert decimal to binary (and octal/hex) with zero-padding.
'chnumber' has been removed, since ${var|.lower}, ${var|.upper},
${var|.ascii}, and $ {var|.swapcase} do the same thing. To the main shell
parser, ${var|<n} and ${var|>n} have been reintroduced to rotate
strings.

About: Browsershots is a system for automatically capturing screenshots of
Web pages in a variety of browsers and making these images available to the
public. Its goal is to make it easier to test the compatibility of Web
pages with a variety of browsers. The system distributes the work of
making screenshots among community members. Anyone can add URLs to the job
queue on a central server.

Changes: The user interface was translated to Finnish and Estonian.
Database performance on the server was improved considerably. The
screenshot factory for MSIE 6.0 was updated to use Flash 7 and cookies,
but only half the RAM. A number of other small improvements and bugfixes
were made.

Software Development :: Testing

About: C-XML UnitTest is a program that generates compiled unit tests for
C (or related languages) using XML marked up files.

Changes: The testsuite was changed so that <testcase> uses the name

[013] - ccbuild 0.2.0
  by A. Bram Neijt (http://freshmeat.net/users/bmm/)
  Tue, May 31st 2005 05:57

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: ccbuild is like a dynamic Makefile. It finds all programs in the
current directory (containing "int main") and compiles them. For this, it
reads the C++ source and looks at all local and global includes. All C++
files surrounding local includes are considered objects for the mean
program. The global includes lead to compiler arguments like path includes
and libraries to link to. The main goal of the project is to allow
development without editing any scripts of any kind. Real
deployment/distribution should still be done with the autotools. As an
added bonus, it can create Makefiles and graph dependencies using DOT
(graphviz) graphs.

Changes: This release features word expansion like a POSIX shell for
ccResolution files. So now users can just call 'pkg-config --lib --
cflags' for the arguments needed. All non-linker arguments are now
compiler arguments, and all known linker arguments are supported.

Security :: Cryptography

About: Ciphire Mail is an email encryption tool. It works in conjunction
with your existing email client. It operates seamlessly in the background
and does not interfere with normal email routines. It encrypts and
decrypts email messages, and can digitally sign each message to provide
authentication and guard against identity theft. It resides on your
computer, between your email client and your email server, transparently
encrypting/decrypting and digitally signing your email communication. It
runs on Windows 2000/XP, Linux, and Mac OS X. It is compatible with all
email clients using standard SMTP, POP3, or IMAP4 (including SSL/TLS
variants and STARTTLS support). It is free for consumers, non-profit
organizations, and the press.

Changes: This release features minor UI improvements, improvements in
signature handling, and IMAP4 fixes for Apple Mail (Tiger).

[016] - Console Password Manager 0.9beta
  by Harry Brueckner (http://freshmeat.net/users/harry_b/)
  Tue, May 31st 2005 05:58

Information Management
Security
Security :: Cryptography

About: cpm (Console Password Manager) is a small console tool to manage
passwords and other sensitive data and store them in a public-key
encrypted file. It also allows you to configure the whole hierarchy
yourself, so it's easily adoptable for many requirements. The encryption
is handled through GnuPG, and the data inside is stored as XML.

Changes: The tool now provides a lot more security features like memory
protection from core dumps, ptrace spying and swapping, and also
validates its runtime environment variables more carefully. Zlib support
has been added so the XML data is compressed inside the encrypted data
which should make it impossible to run any known plaintext attacks. File
locking is now supported which should make it possible to share database
files among several users without any overwriting issues. The code had
been cleaned up using flawfinder to detect any possible security issues.

separately, this version now has nicely separated Queue class, that deals
with thread pooling and task distribution.

About: Gravit is a gravity simulator. It uses simple Newtonian physics
using the Barnes-Hut N-body algorithm. Although the main goal of Gravit is
to be as accurate as possible, it also creates beautiful looking gravity
patterns. It records the history of each particle so that it can animate
and display a path of its travels. At any stage you can rotate your view
in 3D and zoom in and out. Gravit uses OpenGL with SDL, SDL_ttf, and
SDL_image.

Changes: Gravit now has scriptable spawn locations using Lua. The source
now compiles with a configure script. There are per-user preferences when
building from source. You can replay in slow motion using a negative value
for frameskip. Your view is automatically zoomed in or out to a newly
spawned simulation. Many other changes were made, including extra color

About: pmacct-contribs consists of a few scripts: a 'showTraffic' tool
that generates traffic reports reading data previously inserted by pmacct
into a MySQL DB, and a 'weblog' tool that displays traffic data in PHP
pages. It aims to be, over time, a collection of scripts and works
revolving around or layered over pmacct.

Changes: A new package has been added to the contributions: pmacct scripts
suite 0.1, a collection of scripts aimed to extract and show meaningful
information (like the top N talkers on the network or talkers that match a
defined threshold) from the database in which pmacct writes the collected
data. The scripts are based on a common library that effectively make them

About: RTL-check is a framework for static analysis of programs from a
safety and security perspective. It performs analysis on RTL, which is the
low-level intermediate representation generated by GCC. This framework was
created for a research project that deals with static analysis and memory
safety of programs developed in unsafe languages such as C or C++. In
particular, it is targeted at detecting buffer overflows statically and
proving their absence. However, this framework should be useful for other
projects dealing with static analysis.

Changes: This release now knows about memory aliases. The output of its
analysis is cleaner and much easier to understand. Many bugs were fixed.

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XSL/XSLT

About: Syntext Serna is an XSL-on-the-fly WYSIWYG XML document editor.
During the editing process, it renders XML documents according to XSL
stylesheets (e.g., a Docbook XSL stylesheet similar to the Norman Walsh
one). As a result, authors constantly see rendered and transformed content
which looks similar to the final presentation. It also provides on-the-fly
XML schema validation and extensive entity support.

Changes: This release brings basic XInclude support, redlining (the
ability to annotate a document for collaborative authoring), new fancy
icons, C++ API examples, and a number of other features.

captures, stores, and visualises table-based time series data. Monitor
probes exist for Linux and Solaris with Windows coming soon. It has a
command line interface, a fast GUI client for graphical visualisation, and
a simple format for extending data capture in the agent. It can access data
from its peers directly, by file sharing, or with the use of a separate
central archiving repository (harvest) to scale to installations of
significant size.

Changes: This releaes adds new features to display CSV and tabular text
files, and now sizes its graphs to a suggested maximum, which is great
for percentage displays. The host information is displayed in more places
and there were several bugfixes in the handling of data.

onto one screen, so you can print it. The printed copy is just as usable
as the on-screen version. It allows you to schedule a single event on
multiple, arbitrary dates (even if they don't form a pattern). It supports
repeating events and private calendars, and allows iCal/Sunbird users to
subscribe. It allows you to categorize events and limit what the user sees
using themes.

[097] - Wi.Ser 0.7.1
  by dvdw (http://freshmeat.net/users/dvdw/)
  Tue, May 31st 2005 11:25

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Wi.Ser is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables an
application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server Swing
app, or as a Web app without any change. It includes a mixed deployment
mode, which supports one server to serve Swing clients and Web clients at
the same time. The framework uses XML to define an application's GUI. It
provides a common widget-based, object-oriented programming interface for
Web and Swing GUIs, which prevents the developer from struggling with HTML
and HTTP or with the internals of Swing. For Swing client/server
applications the client/server split as well as the client/server
communication is handled transparently by the framework. The project
includes a GUI builder that is based on the framework's functionality
(screenshot, deployed as a Web/HTML application).

Changes: This release fixed several bugs, including memory leaks caused by
Swing renderers, font settings in menus, etc. A new file chooser plugin has
been developed.
