RFP: Partition recovery help

this is a request to package some file/partition recovery tools.

I inadvertently, using qtparted, ran mkfs on a partition to create a
filesystem, thinking there was not already a filesystem there, but
discovering that qtparted did not recognize it as an LVM partition with an
ext3 filesystem. Turned out to be my main partition, with my root and home
directories on it. I have since installed Fedora Core 4 on another disk in
the same system, pending recovery of this old partition.

Tried to recover using gpart, testdisk, e2retrieve, and e2extract, but all
of them report no files to be recovered. Further examination using debugfs
and mke2fs found bad magic numbers for all the blocks that might have
backups of the magic number. The description for e2extract suggests it might
be a solution, but the source won't compile on my system, running Fedora
Core 4, and no one at the email addresses for the authors has responded with
a solution to that problem.

I can run a strings commend on the partition, /dev/sda2, and all the data is
still there. The problem is getting past a bad superblock to recover the 
files, and perhaps even recover the partition in place. Can anyone offer any 
suggestions?
