  Yum brings a script used with service yum that does exactly this, look for 
its output:

/etc/cron.daily/0check4updates:

Updated Packages
psmisc.i386                              21.5-5               updates-released
slib.noarch                              3a1-3.fc4            updates-released
umb-scheme.i386                          3.2-39.fc4           updates-released
