Grief building lirc [kmdl]

I've been trying to rebuild the lirc kmdl RPM so as to include a new module
(igorplugusb). I'm just about giving up :-(

I eventually found some old .rpmmacros that seemed to get me building from
the ATRPMs SRPM, but they were for FC2 and I'm not suer they're up to it.

Some extra jiggery with seemingly missing bttv headers out of the kernel
SRPM (i.e., I needed them, they were missing from kernel-devel) and I thought
I was there (albeit only doing the kdml RPM, not the rest - odd).

But the modules this process creates won't load: "invalid module format"
or some such.

Any clues? Anyone out there besides Axel compiled lirc RPMs? I'm actually
going to want to do this on FC3 (my MythTV box), but I've been proving the
process no my main FC4 box.
