Having recently spent a good number of hours getting my CentOS 4.2
system at home working correctly again after unwisely doing an update
with "yum --enablerepo=atrpms", "scary" seems appropriate.  After the
update, yum, smart, and apt were all non-functional.  Finally fixed it
by forced downgrades to base packages.  My approach to ATrpms has been
for some time (after earlier bad experiences with replacements of core
packages and clobbering of configurations for yum, apt, etc. - yeah I
should have know better this time) to cherry-pick the packages I want,
but not to enable the repository.  Either synaptic or smart-pm can help
with this.

The yum "includepkgs=" feature may be what you need.  Specify xmltv and
then add deps until it works.
