It does runtime detection, and correctly detemines that it runs on a 
non-altivec capable machine. I suspect the compiler decided that some 
altivec would be pretty neat at some point. Do you have a -debuginfo 
package for your mplayer?

Disabling altivec will have a negative performance impact for sure.
