Can someone explain why every one loves yum? It is eating all memory.

I tested in vmware, starting with 256Mb Did do a yum update and all memory
was taken up and additional 100-200mb from swap.
I thought lets do 784Mb ram,  used a same snapshot vm image and did again a
yum update.. and again eating the whole 784Mb and some swap. On many FC3
machines I maintain with between 1Gb and 2,5Gb ram, it always eats all
memory and some swap.
apt have not this behaviour.
