I use it because I find it simple to use and configure.  Setting up
local repositories is also very simple.  It solved my problems with very
little effort.  (caveat:  I've never used apt but haven't seen the need
since I've been happy with yum.)

I've not see this in any yum release on Fedora.  I just tested this
again and didn't see any significant memory usage nor any swap usage.  I
was monitoring via vmstat.  I'd be curious how you were monitoring this
so I could try to duplicate the problem.
