A brief note on this--I've got FC6 installed and I was able to use the desktop effects with my old ATI card (Radeon 9200 SE) and the free software driver that FC6's x.org uses. I'm using an old dual CPU machine (2 500MHz Pentium IIIs on an ASUS P2B-D). There are a number of drawbacks to the desktop effects I see. Some things don't work as well as they should, and desktop effects seems to require a great deal of CPU power when doing any of the effects; the system as a whole feels more sluggish when I use it. But it does work without the proprietary ATI driver. I can get the jist of what desktop effects are all about. Is there a free NVidia driver in x.org? If so, would it work well enough to try desktop effects? Thanks.
