AFAIK, it has never been recommended to use an external ffmpeg with xine-lib, since all of the xine-lib code is closely tied to the included ffmpeg code, and that ffmpeg evolves very quickly. This is why I don't rebuild xine-lib against the external ffmpeg, nor vlc for instance.
