Contrary to my previous post, my message reads "Cannot stat nvidia 0: 
Permission denied" - there are one of these for each nvidia device 0-9

nVidia driver does seem to be working, BUT, I if I open the "NVIDIA X Server 
Settings" GUI and click on the "Open GL/GLX Information" selection, my 
desktop immediately goes black and I return to a login screen. On the opening 
screen of that GUI it shows "NVIDIA Driver Version:  1.0-9762"
