Short answer: it's been slow, painful, and messy, but an alpha test 
version for the brave (and/or foolhardy) will be here in a day or two.

Long answer:

I finally have built a LiveCD which (mostly) works.. there are errors in 
the init scripts (circular deps, tries to unmount stuff in the wrong 
order, etc) and some slight problems with the build (missing 
modules.dep, for instance) but it boots on my machine and functions 
mostly as it should. I'm going to do another build today and then I will 
upload the first experimental beta to dev.gentoo.org and then it will go 
off to the mirrors. I'll need help testing it and fixing bugs. 
(gentlemen, start your CD burners!)

The big problem, though, is that the build is convoluted and not easily 
reproduced. I wish building the CD was as easy as "emerge liveCD, get a 
stage3 tarball, and edit this settings file" so that other people could 
try it and help improve it, but it's not. This makes debugging and 
bugfixing tricky.

I think drobbins is working on a nice new cross-platform livecd script, 
but in the meantime I hope to get the build environment on a shared 
machine (hopefully the one at DEC^WCompaq^WHP's Cambridge Research Labs) 
so that others can help with bugfixing that way. I really don't want 
this process to get lost again like it did when bjb went *poof*.
