build fails on groff

Hi,

I'm trying to build using the stage1-alpha-20040313. The bootstrap
seems to work find, but when I then emerge system it fails on groff
and the config.log show this error

configure:2360: checking that C++ compiler can compile simple program
configure:2372: g++ -o conftest -mieee -O2 -mcpu=ev56   conftest.cc

configure:2377: ./conftest
./conftest: error while loading shared libraries: libgcc_s.so.1:
cannot enable executable stack as shared object requires: Error 14
configure:2380: $? = 127

google doesn't seem very helpful with this.  Any pointers on this, or
has it come up before ... or perhaps is there a better stage1 I should
be using.

This is from a pc164ux (ruffian) ... I'm also trying on a pc164lx, and
I'll try with mcpu=ev4, though I don't think that's going to help.
