Hi Brian,
I have the same problem. Fortunately, there appears to be a solution:
emerge the latest gzip (gzip-1.3.5) and try again. I haven't had the
chance to try this myself, I just found out about this in the buglist (bug
#53641 on http://bugs.gentoo.org/).
