For those wondering what the -o option Sam is referring to is: It is part of a draft patch for multiprocessing.elcass which adds an -o argument to get_makeopts_* allowing to specify the name of a variable whose content is appended, thereby taking precedence, to the OPTS search list. It's meant to accommodate the cases where the default OPTS search list of multiprocessing eclass, which is heavily GNU Make centric, is insufficient. It would allow, for example, to include NINJAOPTS. See https://paste.gentoo.zip/9ezaIrZC That said, negril was so kind and did prepare a get_makeopts_* migration branch: https://github.com/gentoo/gentoo/compare/master...negril:gentoo:qa/multiprocessing/makeopts_deprecation As far as I can tell, for the vast majority of makeopts_* invocations the migration is a straight forward string substitution. There are two cases I am aware of in ::gentoo which could benefit from the -o option: sci-libs/vtk, which for some reason first checks NINJAOPTS and then MAKEOPTS, this carries a special semantic which is unclear if needed, or if it could simply be replaced with $(MAKEOPTS="${MAKEOPTS} ${NINJAOPTS}" get_makeopts_jobs) or, assuming the patch above is applied, with $(get_makeopts_jobs -o NINJAOPTS) The other one is zig.eclass's zig_get_jobs(), where we could replace local all_args="${MAKEOPTS} ${ZBS_ARGS_EXTRA}" local default_jobs="$(get_nproc)" local jobs="$(makeopts_jobs "${all_args}" "${default_jobs}")" with local default_jobs="$(get_nproc)" local jobs="$(get_makeopts_jobs -o ZBS_ARGS_EXTRA "${default_jobs}")" - Flow
