Just a lowly user of Gentoo (for what feels like eons), but I only use
vanilla-sources, for the reason that immolo gave:

I've noticed there is a user base around sys-kernel/vanilla-sources.

For tidyness, I try and have my systems only use packages. Sure, I could
just grab sources from kernel.org, but it's much nicer to have the ebuild
take care of that for me, give me an easy way to apply local patches, etc.
