I currently use gentoo-kernel{,-bin}, but have used vanilla-kernel in
the past and manually fetched upstream sources before that.

My reasons for not using the "gentoo" flavor package:

1. I did not like having "-gentoo" in the version field.
2. I was unfamiliar with the patches gentoo applied.

These days I don't care to micro-manage things as much and I'm
satisfied with the minimal changes the gentoo-* packages introduce.
