There in lies a huge problem. Red hat's auto updating features suck. They WILL crash the system unless your doing only that. Applications could be written to do overlays. Like keep the configs but overwrite all the major things and autoconfigure itself to the differences in apps and dependencies. Auto update apps are not a good idea unless there are security holes that need to be addressed. I do believe any update program written should be a shell app, and that's as simple as just a few lines passed to portage.
