Gentoo is very much for the developers. It also works allong the itch scratching lines. And currently the priority is not with average users. The reason? Well, if you want to cater average users you need to do different things from when you cater power users. Gentoo started out as a power-user distribution. It's main strengths are in easy customization, and rolling of your own packages. After that it has an attitude not to know what's best for the user. These strengths would be weaknesses for average or new linux users. In my personal opinion, such users would be better served by another distribution. In my view different distributions have different goals, and different targets. Each one can exist on it's own, and we should work to share our experience instead of engaging in fierce competition. As gentoo is a 100% volunteer effort we are able to make that choice. Gentoo tries to do what it thinks is best for gentoo, but does not try to change what Gentoo is.
