The only thing I care about is that I can say I want
hardened-dev-sources, that I want these 3 patch files applied in this
order, and I want it built with this .config, other than that do
whatever :)  One benefit of a genkernel kernel being provided is that
for interactive installs, a user can get the system booting at least,
then emerge their preferred sources and patch to their heart's content.
