To those of you who don't frequent our IRC channel and don't know what's going on, I thought I'd toss an update. Our installer is basically at alpha status (we are going to call the version that gets put on the experimental livecd our alpha release). Both of the front-ends are coming together nicely, and both are able to complete installs using a variety of options. There are still, obviously, kinks to work out in areas such as partitioning, and odd bugs that have shown up in our vmware tests. Here's the eye candy. http://dev.gentoo.org/~codeman/dialog1.png http://dev.gentoo.org/~codeman/dialog2.png http://dev.gentoo.org/~codeman/gtkfe1.png http://agaffney.org/installdone.png For speed install tests, we have some good news. On Andrew's 1.3 GHz athlon with slow ATA drives he completed a test install in 25 minutes utilizing GRP and stage3. On my 2 GHz athlon64 and SATA drive, I completed a test install in under *10 minutes*. This rivals any other distro out there, while maintaining the customizability of gentoo. Ok that's it for the status update. We are not yet looking for testers unless they are experienced gentoo users and have boxes to spare. Look for more news once the experimental 2005.0 livecd gets released. -Preston Cody aka. Codeman.
