Two points:

(1) There's a big difference between making a very visible
mistake like typing 'rm -rf *' in / and not noticing a file
which, if there at all, is hidden from normal view!

(2) Lots of unix users work in a multi-unix environment and
use multi-machine accounts.  After a while such users tend
to evolve a profile which works well on lots of machines.
I see no reason why such a profile can't work nicely against
gentoo.  Having 'csh' in an NIS profile didn't prevent login
after all, it just stoped ssh login if there was no 'csh'
entry in /etc/shells.
