Unsupported scheme, etc

I have achieved a basic stage 3 install, but can't get much further.

I have done:
emerge rsync
emerge kde-base/kde
with no problems

but:
emerge gdm
fails with:
Unsupported scheme
emerge aborting on /usr/portage/net-libs/linc/linc-0.5.2.ebuild

further:
emerge evolution
emerge mozilla
both say:
couldn't find match for : in net-www/mozilla-1.0-r3

help!
