Bobby said it all. Also, as said in the doc pages, if you install from the
tarball, it is a good idea to install it under /opt (place to install all
external binaries or builds not from ebuild - it is a convention though).

Why don't you try mutt.  It's just as good if not better.  You could 
also download the tarball and compile it yourself :)
