what does not emerge in emerges?

Hi All,
if I emerge --update system and world from release gentoo 1.2 and do the
same from gentoo 1.4b what should be the differences in the results? Is
there something "stable" in 1.2 that will not emerge to the same current
state of portage tree of today as it will be with 1.4b?
