Just "emerge gnome" and you'll end up with GNOME 2.  Then, simply emerge 
whatever GTK apps (such as AbiWord, Evolution, gAIM, etc) that you want to 
use.  They will automatically grab whatever older GTK libraries they need as 
dependencies, and those libraries will co-exist happily with the GTK2 libs.
