Another alternative would be to boot with the CD. Enable your 
ethernet card for access to the Internet, then ftp the stage you 
want from the internet.

I don't recall if 'ftp' is included in the virtual linux kernel 
that's booted with but I think it is.

Since I use an ADSL connection,  I normally boot with the ISO, 
copy the PPP, RP-PPPoE software and stages to the hard drive and 
go from there. That way I only need the cdrom drive for a short 
period of time.

But you should be able to do the same thing over the Internet as 
well so long as you have the full address and path to the 
software you want to download.

I'll see if I can figure out the exact procedure for doing this. I 
can see where this would be useful for building Gentoo on a 
system which can't boot from the cdrom drive.

Also, I'm sure the Gentoo site has instructions for same.
