Interestingly this is again a nautilus window containing a text view to display the document. Wouldn't it be possible somehow to skip or hide the file-roller part to just open the document in the text view? I got the appropiate ppd file from the web and started up cupsd to add the printer via the webinterface. And that is where the trouble starts: the Gentoo printing howto says for the name of the printer i should use the same name i used when executing foomatic. Well i didnt use foomatic, since i downloaded the ppd from the web. So i assumed 'printer' as name. Also what would i have to enter for the location field? i tried smb://user:passwd@server/share. the webinterface then asks for 'Device URI' and again i tried smb://user:passwd@server/share. The webinterface suggests everything went fine and says the printer is idle, accepting jobs, but when i try to print a testpage it gets canceled right away. i also tried if my samba works and successfully mounted some fileshares on the server, so i guess its just a problem of finding the proper cups settings for the printer. I use Gentoo 1.2. The printer is a Fujitsu PrintPartner 10V. Any ideas? A HOWTO-use-windows-printer-with-CUPS would also be nice. Maybe it was courrier-imap? Or something wasn't right with my config? I know there is a thread about that on the gentoo forums somewhere... Date: Thu, 5 Sep 2002 18:14:24 +0300 Here's the situation, in more detail: I successfully boot from the CD, then created and mounted my partitions, then tried to untar the stage3 archive. As this failed, it took me a while to figure that the error message was issued by bzip2. I tried to bzip2 -tvv the archive, which resulted in exactly the same error message. Further, I copied the file (no error) from the cdrom to the already mounted root partition, and tried bzip2 -tvv the local copy, which didn't work, either. Now, it is copying the file from the cdrom to the disk that tells me my CD is most probably ok. Of course, the cdrom driver might produce bogus data reading from certain types of cdroms. I am running an XP on the same machine, so I reboot into XP, copied the same file to the disk, and then proceeded to uncompress and untar it with WinRAR, and it went as smoothly as possible. Having in mind your experience, it's most probably a buggy cdrom driver. I'll try get a more robust cdrom drive, and I'll try again. I kept getting a bad netmask and I found that I had entered the wrong info. I want to allow all from 192.168.69.1 to 192.168.69.254 which are my local LAN addresses so it should be 192.168.69.0/32. That did the trick. My next question is that now I can connect and send mail to a local user, it won't let me relay through it from my local LAN and it is set up to allow that (I think).
