I'm running metalog...there is no /var/log/messages.  I've grep'ed through 
the /var/log directory tree and have not found anything usefull.

Too bad old 'dmesg' info isn't retained.  All I have is the 'dmesg' output
from the most recent boot, which is a working kernel.  I guess it would be
hard for that to get recorded (i.e. written to disk), considering the OS 
doesn't come up 'cause it can't mount the filesystem on the hd ;-(
