I tried the commands that you suggested, and it didnt change the behavior.

Xfree is still dying on install phase in the emerge. To see my problem
installing xfree, see:
lists.gentoo.org/pipermail/gentoo-newbies/2002-September/002442.html

It is still dying on a "cp" command with "XftConfig argument list too
long"

When doing the commands you suggested, the "emerge -p -u world" showed
no files to merge. Thus it did nothing when I typed the next command
"emerge -u world".

Should I start from scratch again and not modify the default USE settings
(except for maybe take out kde and gnome as I want to use icewm???)

Again, thank you all for taking the time,
gabe
