Oops, I didn't read his message closely enough (or wasn't thinking). 
You are right; he wouldn't be able to log in, if there was no 
/etc/passwd entry.

Do all accounts have this problem?  Try creating a new one.  If it is 
just yours, take a close look at /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow.  I can't 
think of what the problem would be, but it seems like it should be there.
