yes, portage expects all the downloaded files to be in
/usr/portage/distfiles/
so you could mount your cdrom there, or bind /mnt/cdrom/ to that, or just
copy the files.

I'd like to install gentoo 1.4_rc1. I have downloaded the approriate stage 3
install package and burned it to a CD as required but I have a problem that

My internet connection is over a 56K modem and my ISP limits me to a maximum
120 minutes of dial-up time before they hang-up on me without warning :-(
Obviously getting a full install with KDE or Gnome and the full 'bag of
tricks' is probably going to take a while longer than this over a modem.  Is
there any way around this?

I do have a 512Kb connection at work, is it possible to download and burn a
batch of CD's with the sources I want and then tell portage to use the CD's
rather than the source servers for the install? - before anyone suggests it
I'm not allowed to take my tower to work and plug it in there ;-)
