`dd /dev/hda /mnt/to/my/backup/my_backup_file`
`cd / ; tar -jlxvpf /mnt/to/my/backup/my_backup_file.tbz2`

with the dd example, it only backs up 1 hardrive
with the tar example, it only backs up the root partition

just be sure to rinse, dry, and repeat with each {harddrive,partition}
