The problem is getting the pcmcia support to work on the boot cd. You can't do
much of anything until you have the network up, and the network card is
pcmcia. Now it is quite possible that the pcmcia support is built into the
kernel on the cd image, but if it is, it isn't working...
In my case, dmesg reports an oops right after the message:
Compaq SMART2 Driver (v 2.4.21)

I have the output from dmesg if it would help anybody. As somebody else
mentioned, lsmod shows a module cpqarray which is listed as Initializing. I'm
guessing from the name that this is "Compaq SMART2 Driver".
There are no more attempts to load any drivers at that point, so we get no
pcmcia, thus no network card drivers, and no real ability to fix it. I have
the stage3 tarball, so I guess I will try to build a new kernel with most of
the unneeded stuff removed (particarly the Compaq SMART2 Driver) and see if
I can use that to continue the process.
