I downloaded the whole lot from ibiblio on a secondary hard drive, and then
took that home. Worked like a charm! It totalled about 5 GB, IIRC. Slight
snag is that some packages needed come from other places (the Sun Java
stuff, for example). Gradually I ended up with everything needed for a full
install. Updating rsync after the build is a no-no as well, as you will then
need new versions of things.

The problem is that I cannot rely on a gentoo system to download files
from the internet. Most of the time I have to use some windows system
and a list of all urls would ease the process of downloading the files a
lot.
