If it's the same chip as on an DFE-530TX then the via-rhine driver in the kernel is quite good. You should not need to compile the driver "manually". Just say yes in the section Networkwork devices->10 100 Mbit->VIA Rhine and the driver is part of the kernel. Works flawlessly.
