How to get TrueType fonts working?

I noticed that the Gentoo XFree86 came with some TrueType fonts.  I've
added the font paths to my XF86config file, but they are still
unavailable for use.  What else do I have to do?  On other OS's I've had
to run ttmkfdir on TrueType directories to generate the fonts.dir files.

Is the same true here?
